Hey Matador,
any info you might like to share regarding the forthcoming CP covers rec 2?
purrty please?
Posted on http://thedrugstore.blogspot.com/Cat Power and Dirty Delta Blues have recorded a new Lp for Matador records "Covers two" , should be released in September ! We recorded the first half @ The Hit Factory Miami (where; James Brown , Derek & The Dominoes , John Lee Hooker , Fleetwood Mac , Aretha Franklin , The Rolling Stones and Dylan recorded)
, then went on our european outing . The Second half was recorded in Brooklyn @ the Rare Book Room with Nicolas Vernhes .
We covered a range of things from Kitty Wells to Nick Cave , so the record sounds very diverse . The sound also shows Chan going back to her rawer side . So "covers two" , (even though recorded by "the greatest" engineer Stuart Sikes) sounds nowhere near as slick and polished as "the Greatest" . The Cat Power fans seem to generally dig the new sound , which owes more to the 60's Bob Dylan "Band" sound or even the Velvet Underground , as opposed to the smooth soul grooves of "The Memphis Rhythym Band" . Some of the fans do however miss the solo stuff , of which this record and tour provides . Chan's is on a road that is much more solid and secure , and with "Dirty Delta Blues" , it seems like the compromise , (between dark and light) is a good one . Rx

No but I really would like to see her in Manhattan this year, I should go there visit a friend soon or later, please tell us when you can about new dates in NYC , thanks.
And why btw was it more amazing there than in Canada?
this is also why I would like to see her in NY.

Btw Patrick , I wish that you or others at Matador would do more to remove that fake vinyl of Chan on eCrap. I'm really tired to see it there using her beauty to make money, it's fake as you know already. It's been there for too long. They are just reprinting the cover over and over it seems.

Chan plus Jim White is always good news. I just hope she records with the rest of the Dirty Three again.

I don`t know how I feel about anyone tweaking Metal Heart. The song is too perfect as is. That is one of few songs that I can listen to over and over and over again and simply not get tired of.

Agreed but she's pretty much gotta do what she feels compelled to do wether people agree with it or not.
Thats what artists do.

I understand that completely, I`m just saying that I, personally, am extremely hesitant going into it. I honestly don`t think that the song could be any more perfect than it already is.

Maybe she aint aiming at perfection? Just an opportunity to reveal a further dimension to that beautiful song.
When someone changes a song instrumentally (its form etc) and keeps only the lyrics, the whole song is brought to another height.
Like Chan does constantly.

Now Ive gave it some thought I think its a super cool thing for her to do because its a recognition of where she's been. The response The Greatest received was as if she'd come out of nowhere, that she didnt have a back history. I think even on this board there were a few people (I dont think they post anymore) who were disappointed that at the Memphis band shows that nearly everything pre-The Greatest had disappeared from her set.
She's just reminding us of where she was.

I think you're on to something...
As all her fans know she has got a brilliant back catalogue, and in the light of this new success with The Greatest, why not bring some of her lesser known songs to this light? The fact that she chose to play Metal Heart is a testament to this. Everyone who is a real fan of Chan's music loves Metal Heart, it truly is a precious gem, why not let everyone know?

Well, I was just talking to Gregg Foreman, and he had this to say regarding DDBB and Cat Power:
"well we are her friends, the only reason I would bother with this is cause I care alot for her and we all care for the music. so if you dont trust us . then trust that she trusts us"
I`m stoked to see what`s to come
Well,
I was sure it was going to end up like this.
If you see how many time Gregg spent on the internet trying to change and improve the cat power myspace page, I'm not surprised at all that he checked those boards out...
And yes, some of the comments posted here about the band and especially about him were a bit...I don't know, harsh? and maybe I was part of them too, i don't know.
Maybe we should try to communicate, like saying what we don't like exactly (I think here that was the voice problem for the most part) but also what we like about the new music so maybe next time he will think about we said and try to solve the problem (if there's any problem anyway...).
Apart from this, I'm glad that she chose to record a new version of moon pix, because that will let us see how she's changed over the years and maybe she will even think of singing it on the next tour !!
I'd love to hear Metal heart live.

What is it that you want to know about ? As long as you guys try to keep things on a good note , I have no problem talking with this forum . And FYI
all the reviews I have read about the new band etc have been more than good
so give us a little break . I encouraged her to bring "Metal Heart" back and we have been doing "Naked" live also . Also you can check out the blog linked from the myspace to see the tour diary I started . . . other than that enjoy ..

i can't believe "making believe" isn't on the album!
rx, is this song combined with "a woman left lonely"? please tell me it's there in some form!
thanx for the amazing show at the 930 club. i love the new "metal heart." it reminded me of chan's solo guitar "colors and the kids" i heard her play years ago- reinventing a cat power classic.
can't wait for the new record.

Well it's not like reading the book before watching the movie I suppose, but Nina Simone's cover of Don't Explain is, big surprise, gorgeous and heartbreaking. I got very much in her after hearing Wild Is the Wind on The Covers Record.
I'm nonplussed about that artwork. Can we relax with the Warhol variations? Everyone's a critic and the "that looks like it could've been done in five minutes with photoshop" line seems just as lazy, but really, how much thought was put into this? I don't even like the colors - the yellow one washes the image out badly, though I guess we're not talking about a major concern at labels these days anyway.
i dig the cover. on a quick glance, i'd swear it was an MIA remix single or the like. chan is hotter, though...

I do know myself well enough to know that provided its up to Chan's usual standards Ill be able to ignore it. I know cause I nearly fucking died from shock when I saw the cover of the last one and I still listen to it.

Wow, you don't like the artwork for The Greatest either? I think it works incredibly well, esp with the finish.
Do you mean your ability to enjoy the musical content (of any album) would be hindered by the artwork?

I wonder if 'Song To Bobby' is dedicated to Benjamin of Smoke?
His real name is Robert.
Looking forward to it.

Heh! Funnily, this is far from what it will be... in the luxe edition it will be one of the more expensive packages we've ever done.
Isn't it dedicated to The Robert?? Bob Dylan ? :D

Nope,
The Bobby from this "song to bobby" is Bob Dylan.
Re: record covers affecting enjoyment of a record. I think the key maxim when it comes to packaging is the hippocratic-oath-syle "first do no harm." I've heard a good case that the album cover has everything to do with why Fleetwood Mac's "Bare Trees" is considered a lost classic and its follow-up "Mystery to Me" is just plain lost. Beautiful winter landscape vs. a crying baboon eating books--I can see why one resonates more with listeners.
And is Bowie's "Pin Ups" his weakest Ziggy-era record because of the material (glammed-up British Invasion covers), or because the cover makes it look like he's a rejected mullet mime act from some Wombles-style kid's show?
For my money, THE album cover that is so awful it makes the music on the record a moot point is Al Kooper's "Act Like Nothing's Wrong." Sorry Al, I can't act that way, not at all. I tried finding an internet image of it, but there's nothing big enough, and you really have to see it as a gatefold vinyl to appreciate it's awfulness.
Oh, and for the record, I like the Warhol-ish Jukebox cover!

If you meant to type 'would not be hindered' then you'd be right Fiona. As long as I really enjoy the music contained within I don't really care what the cover looks like. Its just that when I see a cover for the first time I make a judgement on wether I like it or not. Ill always give the music a chance because you can't really decide from a cover wether something going to be enjoyable or not.
Its just that, even being a favourer of the CD, I like a nice cover and I don't really think this is one. Roll on the 21st January is all I can say.:)

the don't explain track is on there . the nick cave song is on the aussie
release it is "breathless" . there are many good songs that didn't make it
on the cd . she will more than likely have them as i tunes buy tracks .
I believe 20 + songs were recorded . so btwn Chan and matador they picked what makes a striking song list . The cover is the cover . that matador cat is
correct , the music inside is what is important . I like the cover anyway .
pop art for the jukebox . also england may be getting the olde triangle
a duet with shane mcgowen . then there are so many other good songs .
we did ; naked if you want to , and others . hope they see the light of day
they are all very great haha if I don't say so myself . G
and sorry if my one comment offended anyone . I jus am protective of chan and the band ... labors of love .. xx
Thanks for the mess Gregg.
The song I listened to during my whole summer in South America was " All I have to do is dream", I don't think it has ever been recorded by Chan, but I'd have loved it, I think it's one of her best interpretation ever.
That's funny because, as being french, I had never heard the original version before, but I was so moved by the lyrics and the melody the first time I heard Chan play it, I just thought it was a song of hers.
That's crazy the ability she's got to make songs sound like they have always been hers.
