Now that Wowee Zowee is out and the dust has settled, any ETA on the next special edition?
Elijah

I'm pretty sure it was said somewhere that the special editions will be coming out every two years at this point; so that should place Brighten the Corners sometime around November 2008.

This still set for next year? Because wikipedia (not the most accurate source ever, I'll admit) says it should be later this year.

They are every two years, so all things going smoothly, the next Pavement deluxe reissue should be fall of 2008.

Yeah, I'm kind of on the fence about this one. I think this was my favorite Pavement record when it first came out. But now, w/passage of time, it's sort of become the least interesting one. Not that it isn't still excellent. Anyways, curious to see what comes with the reissue. Happy to pay for it again and again. I think I've bought most of the Pavement records at least twice (once on CD, once on vinyl, once on CD reissue). You guys are like Phillip Morris.

It has the best b-sides though, which makes the reissue essential. You want to complain about buying things, I bought all the EPs and singles off eBay in the days before file sharing, all of which have a market value of nothing right now

Ditto, will undoubtably buy reissue, this is the reissue I've really been waiting for.

So many b-sides came out with this, any actual unreleased full tracks coming out on this one?

One would have to draw the logical (and fairly obvious) conclusion that those tracks were recorded at the same time as the rest of the BTC material, especially since live versions debuted at the infamous Cat's Cradle show in 1996 and then promptly disappeared (if I recall correctly).

will there be an RTI pressed vinyl version of "Brighten" released in tandem?
Patrick

No there will not be... RTI is so backed up right now they can't even get our new releases or catalog re-presses done... not to mention that designing and laying out these deluxe editions is a massive amount of work. Just double CD and digital album.

Come Terror Twilight I really hope the vinyl is on. TT is the only Pavement thing that was released on vinyl that I don't have on vinyl (or, er, cd...) as I got completely sucked in by the dazzling technology of the last decade and bought the cd + cd-rom version. And now come 2008 not only do I have that but I've a second standalone copy of the cd-rom, tho still no vinyl. So a vinyl re-press of TT would be nice/is essential, please and thank you.

Thank you Matador. "Nigel" is a huge shock. I remember Malkmus saying that he preferred the non album tracks to the actual album. Personally I think it's all Pavement at their prime. A criminally underrated album with some of Malkmus' best lyrics and riffage. It's my favorite album ..but that's just an opinion. Who cares?
How are our chances of getting "Destroy Modern Day" and/or "Rainy Day Sunshine Girl" from KCRW???

"Destroy Mater Dei" isn't a cover - Mater Dei is an athletic powerhouse high school in the Los Angeles area and perhaps there was some sort of rivalry involving them and Cate (one of the high schools SM went to).
Also: "The Classical" and "The Killing Moon" are covers.
Hopefully "Rainy Day Sunshine Girl" and "Destroy Mater Dei" will surface as bonus material.
I just noticed that "Shady Lane (Krossfader)" isn't on here either.

Do you guys at Matador not realize how beloved "Destroy Mater Dei" is among Pavement fans? Not to mention that we've had to suffer through eighth generation radio recordings of it for the past ten years. I hope it's being thrown in as a single or something with this set, because it would be a huge mistake to sit on it

here's hoping it does surface if at all possible. it'd be a shame if a good unreleased song gets lost forever when a fun but fairly inessential run-through of "maybe, maybe" does make the cut, despite being them both being the same length. but of course, i'm not the one putting it together.

Two great songs Winter Version. Destroy Mater Dei is a short poppy little number reminiscent of I Love Perth. Rainy Day Sunshine chugs along in the vein of She Believes. Surprisingly not mentioned here is the cover of VU's What Goes On which they absolutely nail and is essential. Right up there with their cover of The Classical.
Would be fantastic to have remastered versions of these songs considering I've made electronic copies from old tapes which sound good enough but I'd love to hear how these would sound cleaned up considering the fantastic treatment given to radio session material in past Pave reissues.
However, this looks to be a great release and I'll take any Pavement that you're willing to give me at this point. Can't wait to hear these unreleased session tracks!

cats and kittens,
In this veil of tears, in this sullen galaxy of huge mistakes, in this arid tundra of frustration, in this valhalla of big disappointments and in this cathedral of 8th generation suffering, please, please allow me to appear here as a beacon of light, a ray of hope, a simple messenger of a possibility of a better, richer and more just life for all.
While this track listing is pretty much carved in shellac final some actual, and perhaps significant, changes here and there may still occur. I can also divulge that there may be other plans for using certain songs that didn't make it onto the two limited-to-80-minutes-each CDs.
(And as frustrating as BEGN can be, how frustrating would no BEGN be? Just askin'...)
Yours,
JE

Please reassure Jesper than their BEGN promotions have all been nothing but brilliant. I think the Pavement legacy will all be archived by the time this thing is done. So all the money you spent on the out of print 45's, your $80 near mint BTC LP and the $40 Japanese Shady Lane EP are now worth shit.
Some songs don't need to be on this reissue because the crazy hardcore fan already has all of these songs and they're pretty much the only ones who really want to hear them.
Oh, what about the Buzzcocks cover of "love is lies"??

Brighten the Corners is by a country mile my favourite Pavement album. Id quite happily fork out again for an expanded version of it. For me it sounds like the moment were they decided to just cut all of the slacker 'we don't rehearse and we put half finished songs on our records' bullshit and just flat out rock for 50 minutes.:):):)

Will we be getting the live LP soon? Sometimes, not all the time, I order something from Matador Store and it comes like 5 days before the release date and I think that is one of the best little surprises. I broke my hand last winter, and when I came back from the hospital there on my doorstep was "Rip It Off" (on the Thursday before the Tuesday release!). It made everything okay until the painkillers wore off. I suppose if someone answere my question then it wouldn't be a surprise.

In this case we've got way more orders than a usual release so we've got a ton of work ahead of us, but I do hope to ship the BEGN orders so they'll be there by street date, if not a bit early. I just had surgery on my broken wrist yesterday so I know all too well about painkillers wearing off.

No, I was on my bike and was cut off by a SUV making a right hand turn (w/out a turn signal of course). Broken in two places, one of the breaks right on the joint. I had pretty extensive surgery yesterday.

Am I the only one who is secretly hoping this is actually the case?

Hmm, nothing yet.
See what you've done, Fiona? Now every day that it DOESN'T arrive is full of consternation and disappointment.
How's it get to Ireland faster than Cambridge?! come on!!!

Is anybody else getting clicks in Westie Can Drum and Winner of the? A bunch of small ones that are hard to notice with a few big ones, at around :26 and :40, that go on for the length of the song? My CD has no scratches, I've ripped multiple times in Exact Audio Copy, even at 1x with as many error corrections as I could enable, and I still get the same exact clicks. I've analyzed the waveforms in Sound Forge and I'm talking sample-identical errors (invert the phase of a second rip, paste it over the first rip, they cancel each other out entirely) which I'm not sure would be the case if it was a slight physical imperfection - and EAC is reporting zero errors (though I don't know if their error correction and detection works on a bit-by-bit level, as even the best brand new cds have 50-100 bit errors per second due to the physical properties of the medium... I think it means unrecoverable E32 errors, which should probably result in something besides digital clicks, and wouldn't in any case give tens of clicks lasting the entire length of two songs).
It's probably just bad data sectors on my cd, but it could also be a manufacturing or mastering issue a la the terrible New Order remasters that just came out if it is happening to other people. It's only those two tracks, as far as I can tell so far, though I haven't done a close examination of every song yet. Anybody? And if you do have perfect copies, can someone send some flacs my way?
Also, my copy of the record is slightly warped, resulting in a maddening crackle that happens once every rotation on Cut Your Hair, but I was able to use restoration software to correct that for my personal vinyl rip. I could try messing with the tonearm weight but I don't want to screw up the calibration for my other records, so I had to manually correct every instance. Ship happens I guess.

Hi DS,
This is the first we've heard of this problem, and we can set you up with a replacement CD if it's defective. I've asked Jesper to jump in on this thread when he gets back next week.
On the vinyl: ah yes, the joys of 120 grams. We were trying to be authentic '90s with this one (and get it out in time). I've come to believe that 120 gram vinyl actually sounds better than the heavier stuff though, even with the comcommitant risk of warpage.

Thanks for the reply. I've tried the CD on some other players, same thing, it's definitely a defective disc.

Finally got it today... or at least I thought so... the package arrived in the mail but the double CD was missing! The only thing in there was the LP. Are they shipping them separate? Did anyone else only get the LP?

I'm still waiting on anything! I'm kinda bummed out because I placed my order really early (before the Matablog announcement even went up) and lots of people I know that ordered later than me have already received them. Hopefully tomorrow.

Doesn't the mastering job have more to do with the quality than the weight anyway? I feel like so much crap has been thrown on 180gsm wax for a premium price while the mastering was scrimped on, leaving me wondering, who cares? My paper thin copy of Nico's Desertshore still sounds better than the new remaster, its just a bit more fragile...
Either way, bring on the flimsy wax, I'm on tenterhooks here!

I hope you guys get yours soon - vast numbers of packages have been shipped.
On the mastering, yes, it's a factor of how much time and effort has been put into it. With Desertshore, it may also be that the original pressing was closer to the original master tape.

(Its OK, I'm just avoiding reading any reviews, I actually do want the Live LP tracklist to be a surprise. I'm sure it'll be here at some point and it'll be awesome)
Hey Tinobeat,
Your record should be getting to you really soon. Most of the USPS orders went out last week but a few remainders went out on Monday. Send me an email if it doesn't arrive in a couple of days. This goes for anyone else still waiting on records- please give it a couple of days but let me know if you're still waiting by next week. Thanks for your patience and enjoy the record!
Take care,
Dean

My copy showed up yesterday and I've noticed the clicking on those two tracks as well. At first I thought it just might be headphones, but they're audible on my stereo as well. They're faint, but definitely there.
I'm still making my way through both CDs, so I don't know if they're on any other tracks.

At least I got the new Racoo-oo-oon 2LP and the new Blues Control CDR in the mail so today wasn't totally empty-handed. Seeing the LP-sized box in the foyer was definitely a tease though for a moment!

I noticed a few minor clicks around the 55 second mark on "Westie Can Drum", but nothing more severe than that. They're not bothersome on my copy - you'd have to be listening very closely to notice - so hopefully most people will be in a similar position.

Mine finally showed up on Saturday. Whew! One minor complaint on the album artwork: Matador did a very wise thing in listing the tracks on both the outer sleeve and the back of the digipack itself on the Wowee Zowee and Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain reissues, but now it's only listed on the outer sleeve for the BTC package, which is kind of inconvenient if you just want to take the digipack along with you instead of the whole package. If there's going to be a Terror Twilight reissue, can you please list the tracks in both places again?

oh, turns out its LAST year's tour CD-r, called A Full Tank. It was on the new list at Fusetron so I was misled. Its a comp of old cassette/split tracks that I didn't have, totally totally awesome.

I have friends in Manhattan who still hadn't gotten theirs as of a week ago, which just seems totally odd since they were being mailed from the city. Are New York postal employees starting their holiday celebrations early?
Hey I've found that as well, very strange!
The few people that wrote and said they haven't received theirs yet are mainly from NY/NJ/MA/Pennsylvania. Maybe Media Mail is extremely busy in this part of the country around the holidays? Apologies to all of you who are still waiting, we tried to get replacement copies out to those that wrote before the holidays.
If you still haven't received your record by the 5th, please write dean@matadordirect.com and let me know. I'll make sure to fix it
Happy holidays everyone
Dean
