so, been waiting to get registered to let you know how this gig went, the 1st of her new tour, but its taken an age to get the confirmation, but thats in the past now.
The gig was in the renfrew ferry, glasgow, an old boat thats kind of half grounded and secured to the riverside. A lovely wee venue, that was totally suited for a solo performance.
with the support out of the way, and a few apperances on stage from J bauer getting set up, Chan made her way onto the stage with two teacups and a handful of papers. There was no arranged setlist rather a series of points to the paper to agree on what song was next between Chan and Judah.
The 1st forty minutes or so was pretty much all new original material bar a version of Moon, and a couple of covers. A version of New York, New York but set to a different tune, and melody was amazing and im surprised that no-one else has picked up on it in other posts. It will probably be the most talked about song on Covers 2. At one point someone from the crowd asked if the songs were from 'Sun' to which Chan replied that Sun was 2 years away, and they had just done a new record with the band.
Anyway, so far so good. then Judah went off and Chan played solo for 30 mins on the piano. Songs included Colors and kids( following a shout from the crowd asking for it) the greatest, paths of glory (which went on for ever) and Wild is the wind in which the whole gig really turned on its head. She lost her way, and started singing about how she had lost her concentration about 20 minutes ago. Then she explained how she had a bad earache, complained about how she couldnt smoke (its banned here), and then told us it was the worse gig she had played, and how even if she was told bad news about her family, she couldnt feel any worse. Well, for those who were enjoying it up to that point, it was a real downer. She struggled on for a while after that, Judah came back on, she played more new stuff, a cover of a Serge Gainsbourg song that really got folk walking out and then was gone.
As much as it lived up to the expectations of what her gigs are like, it was really disapointing to see her in that fashion. Apparently the next night was really good though!
