I'm spending this entire week absorbing some bootlegs that I got last semester.

Frank Zappa ('73), Sonic Youth ('87), Pavement ('94), Miles Davis w/ John Coltrane ('60), Tortoise ('03), Beck ('97), Flaming Lips ('02), Tom Waits ('75), Talking Heads ('81).

I have Modest Mouse, Mogwai, Jeff Tweedy, and Wilco on my computer, but I can't remember the dates.

in a small pile next to my desk at work:

Lilys - Precollection CD
I'm tellin you folks, Earthquake Glue had better be fuckin incredible (as I'm sure it will be), cos Kurt Heasley just might have beat Pollard at his own game, while at the same time sounding undeniably Lilys...

V/A - The Tell-Tale Sign Of Earworm 2CD
wonderful Earworm records comp from a few years back, lovely songs from Novak, Magnetophone, Fridge, The Minders, I S A N, and others.. hadn't listened to it in about a year, but its faboo..

Panoply Academy Glee Club - What We Defend CD
a bit edgy for work, but you know, I'm feeling a little edgy myself today, having gotten very little sleep the past few nights and working two 18 hour days in a row. Darin Glenn has one of the coolest voices in rock music.

The Beatings - The Heart, The Product, The Machine, and The Asshole CD
not to be confused with the Beatings from the UK, the boston Beatings are amazing. This EP is a little mellower, a little sadder...

i'm working my way through the complete recordings of charley patton (5 discs on JSP) this week. i have a strange association (not entirely strange i guess) when i'm listening, since i imagine thora birch in ghost world when i listen to delta blooze.
also: rolling stones-beggars banquet

new pornographers-electric version (has anyone read andrew carew's review on neumu.com? this guy only publishes clunkers, but he appears to be the perfect antipode to pitchfork's reviews (that's a layered comment: he's not as keen a writer but a suitable foil nevertheless). i love all for throwing you around.

pavement: 11/20/99 brixton cd-r. i read a review of slow century recently that said that the concert ended shortly after malk made the handcuff comment, but as far as i can recall, that came pretty early in this recording. i'll cut the reviewer some slack (strayslack?) since it's impossible to tell from the dvd and you'd like it to be a dramatic culmination rather than just a tossed off comment, but it's pretty far off base.

i've also named my new kitten black walls. yes, he's black.

For the last two days, I've been trying to find any redeeming qualities in St. Anger, and there are none. Absolutely ZERO. Early contender for worst album of '03, and definitely the worst Metallica album ever.

It got a US release this week, and I really like it. I have to admit that it's my first exposure to them - I'm a big fan of Ivy, so I figured that it wouldn't be too far removed - and it isn't! Also the fact that you lot on this board have talked 'em up a bit helped nudge me to buy too... now I must search out more of their stuff!

High Society - Enon
This Night - Destroyer
Sumday - Grandaddy
Hail to the Thief - Radiohead

I heard the single from the new FOW and was disappointed by it. I really think that their first album will remain my favorite of theirs.

By the way, I saw Cex, Enon, and D. Plan the other night. What a great show. Too bad D. Plan is breaking up; I've only just struck up a relationship with them.

The Fall - Totally Wired: The Rough Trade Anthology 2CD
I've been meaning to dive into the Fall catalog for years now, and slowly accumulating songs on mix tapes and CDs and various comps has convinced me that I need to know more, but I could never figure out where to go. so I went the sort of "greatest hits" route and got this 2CD set... I'm very very happy I did. what a fucking crazy band...

[[VVRRSSNN]] - s/t LP
annoying way of spelling "Version," but then again, Adam from Yume Bitsu's a weird guy, so I'm sure he has his reasons.. great record though. more beats and tripped-out vocals, kind of like the last song on the last Yume Bitsu record but even more so. I definitely recommend it. handpainted covers too!

Saturday Looks Good To Me - All Your Summer Songs CD
A friend insisted I get this, saying I'd go crazy over it. I'm not sure why she thought I'd go crazy over it, but I really like it, and can definitely see why she'd like it (she's very into kind of twee, girly pop). Either way, if you like the last Aislers Set album then this is right up your alley too. I'm still getting used to it, but its got some wonderful production going on. if there were any more reverb it would collapse on itself...

"Baby's Breadth" is really good, it's a concept album, and contains what's probably the only sing-along rock song ever written about circumcision.

Bedhead - What Fun Life Was
:: God I needed this today. What a great fucking record!! I have been listening to this record for some time now on and off. I knew that it needed more attention than I was giving it. I gave it the full on, much deserved attention today and I almost cried.

I have to thank many of you for turning me onto Ted Leo and the Pharmacists. I got a disc recently that was made up of a bunch of live performances from the 80s that were hideous with treble and tape loop repitition. I was kind of pissed off by it and haven't listened to it since the first time I popped it in, which was about 2 months ago. There was something there though that made me want to check out some more recent stuff. Man, has that guy matured! This is great music (Heart of Oak). Thanks everyone. Maybe one day I'll get around to the early stuff again. Maybe I'll even appreciate it!

Also, we put a stereo in the bedroom a few months ago so I usually put on something fairly mellow when we go to bed.

So, this morning while I got ready, I listened to the second disc of that Brain Donor album and part of the first then I listened to part of that Nektar album in the car and I'll be listening to it again when I get in the car to go home in a few minutes.

BTW, in between my last post and this one I listened to Feel the Darkness by Poison Idea.

yovan, nice tunes ... that john B album is great, especially the first disc. a bunch of stuff for me lately:

built to spill - there's nothing wrong with love
yo la tengo - the sounds of the sounds of science
radiohead - hail to the thief
jane's addiction - strays
the decemberists - castaways and cutouts
amon tobin - supermodified

v/a - toasted: massive ragga jungle
the rapture - echoes

not quite how i feel about the new jane's addiction yet. some songs i really love, and individually a lot of it works, but as an album too much of it sounds the same to me. before the new jane's though, i can't think of the last time that i bought an album the day it came out without having heard a single song on it before (not even the single).

on that note, has anyone heard the new broadcast album yet? i think it's out next month ... love the pendulum EP, curious to hear the new record....

interesting selections in the replies here...

i've actually been enjoying "St. Anger" by Metallica quite a bit; the lyrics are weak, but when played loud, this album is quite a rocker (i have been a devout metallica fan since "And Justice..." so my opinion is obviously going to be baised). Regardless of the slew of terrible reviews, this is the hardest and most "metal" metallica record since the harder stuff on the black album. oh well... i'm also listening to:

*the cure - pornography
*elastica- radio one sessions
*mastodon -remission
*boys life -boys life
*radiohead -hail to the thief

seriously... metallica will never make another gem like "master of puppets" again, but at least their intentions are good. they're trying to rock out, which is much more that i can say for what they were trying to do with "reload" and "load," not to mention that ridiculous record with the symphony.

before you mention specific examples for why "St. Anger" sucks so bad, and try to make me look like an ignorant fool, take into consideration that these guys ARE essentially a bunch of old men trying to recapture their youth: give them some semblance of credit for trying to rock again.

Joseph
07-29-2003, 01:21 AM
I can't comment on St. Anger cos I haven't heard it* and, God willing, I'll never hear it. But I was shocked by yer suggestion that the so-called Black Album, which I have heard, contained "harder stuff" on it. I thought the Black Album was widely considered to be Metallica's big sell-out (two words that make up one name: Bob Rock) and I figured everyone knew that Metallica has been running on empty for at least fifteen years now. If you have even the most rudimentary knowledge of death metal, then you know that Metallica is, was and always will be chopped liver compared to what is being done in the underground. C'mon, these guys write songs about the sandman! Hate Eternal would eat Metallica up for breakfast.

*I have heard the first single from the album and it is bad.

interesting comments. however, your sad attempt at death metal elitism is unwarratned and unnecessary.

you see, friend, i was simply replying to prior comments about "St. Anger" on this post.

regarding the black album, while its production is commercial and very slick, it did still feature a competent and capable metallica on several tracks, including "sad but true," "struggle within," and "through the never." of course, the "hits" from that album did, in fact, feature a band with green in their eyes.

finally, your pro- hate eternal and "underground" comments show just how limited the scope of your musical lexicon truly is. hate eternal is pretty much the justin timberlake of the "death metal underground" that you covet, which actually doesn't really exist, poop head; do you mean swedish dm? american? finnish? be more specific if you want to sound "elite" to people browsing these posts.

How am I "elite"? I was just giving an example of a metal band that is currently beating Metallica at its own game. I could have named any number of other metal bands to prove my point, I just chose Hate Eternal cos I happen to like their music.

Personally, I've never liked Metallica -- their music is juvenile and trite, even by heavy metal standards. Being a grown-up who pays his own bills, I have no time for their new "angry rehab rock" nor their D 'n' D fantasies of yore.

I haven't heard much of Sharrock's early stuff. Ask the Ages is one of my all time favorite jazz albums though. It's such a ferocious album, but so sublte and sophisticated at the same time. Comes the closest to mid 60s Coltrane that any album of the past 30 years has. I like his playing on the first Pharaoh Sanders album a lot too. I think Guitar is a pretty specialized taste, as most solo instrument albums tend to be.

Good deal on Ted Leo. I just discovered him this year. But Biomusicology has already joined my 'essential songs' list.

re: Sonny Sharrock

I was first introduced to him via his massive 1987 album Sieze the Rainbow. It's him on electric guitar, Melvin Gibbs on bass and two drummers. As far as I know, it's still in print (www.CDUniverse.com has it in stock). It's by far the most metallic of his albums, so metal-phobes beware. While his first recording with Pharoah Sanders, Tauhid, is very good, I actually prefer the second Sanders album he played on, Izipho Zam (My Gifts), released on the tiny Strata East label and reissued on CD by Charly in the UK a few years back. I highly recommend it (I still need to pick up the CD as my LP is rather crackly).

Edit: Sanders/Sharrock fans would do well to check out guitarist Tisziji Muńoz. He's a very fiery player, like Sonny Sharrock filtered through John Coltrane. He's released about a bazillion albums and Pharoah Sanders, as well as Rashied Ali, play on a bunch of 'em. His latest, and probably easiest to find, is Divine Radiance. One warning: his albums tend to veer wildly between almost new-agey synth washes (curtesy of Paul Shaffer) with mellow guitar and screaming free jazz with blistering guitar and sax workouts. The good more than makes up for the cheese.

While Joseph's more than capable of handling this himself, I'd like to point out he said he hadn't heard the new Metallica except for the single which he hated, and wasn't ever a fan of them. Get over yrself already.

I'll check out Seize the Rainbow. I heard it once at a record store that I worked at, and it sold before I could form much of an opinion. Metallic sounds good to me.

Anyway, if this Munoz guy has Pharoah and Rashied playing with him, he's worth checking out. Thanks for the tip.

What's your opinion on James Blood Ulmer? I think the Odyssey album and the Music Revelation Ensemble albums are massive. I recommend them a lot to people who aren't too into modern jazz, and they always come back impressed.

By somehow turning the subject of a Sonny Sharrock recording into how Joseph cannot understand the beauty of the new Metallica album because critics don't like it (wha?), you've managed to make it look like you don't really care aboot anything that's said here if it doesn't completely and totally relate to what you've said/how you feel.

Vesper: my thoughts on the Juan Maclean track are here (http://purerockfury.pitas.com). I hadn't downloaded the Rapture track previously, so I didn't know what to expect, but it's pretty good. Not the highlight of what I've heard from the forthcoming LP, but they're back to sounding a lot like the Cure vocally (unfortunately, it's The Top-era Cure, but I can live with that). The trade off on the vocals is pretty neat, too.

Not that I know either of them, but Joseph initially attacked bloodflower for suggesting that there may be "harder" songs on the eponymous album.

Edit: It should probably go without saying but the six Last Exit albums (featuring Sonny Sharrock, not to mention Peter Brötzmann) are all pretty indispensable.

I didn't attack anyone -- I was merely taken aback by the suggestion that the Black Album contained "hard" material. It did not contain anything harder than yer average radio hit and I felt that fact was worth pointing out. And when I brought up the fact that there are countless other metal bands toiling in obscurity who are clealry harder than Metallica currently are or ever were, I was callled "elitist." Figure that one out if ya can!

Why do people make such a fuss over Metallica anyway -- they're a fuckin' joke and have always been one. C'mon, they're called Metallica, for Lee Ranaldo's sake! I remember seeing an episode of Behind the Music featuring the boys and when asked if the band had sold out, Jason Newsted dropped this nugget of amusement: "Yeah, we sell out -- every seat in the house, everytime we play." They also discussed being "washed down" by naked babes backstage each night.

Edit: I just wanted to point out that this was my 69th post on this board -- I can only imagine that James and the boys would be pleased to know that.

i know this is a matador post, and this all started simply because i said that i enjoyed the new metallica record, but look kid: the majority of your favorite underground dm bands are going to tell you that the first three metallica records are essential, including your precious hate eternal.

One final thought: Metallica is definitely one of the worst band names ever. That doesn't invalidate their music, though.

I've seen those albums. I want to check them out for Sharrock, Laswell, and Ronald Shannon Jackson, but the Brotzmann stuff that I've heard was a little too abstract for my taste.

Hey, if those words are good enough for the Rolling Stones, then they're good enough for yours truly.

but you also name dropped lee ranaldo, proving to me and everyone else just how diverse "yer" musical tastes are (i give you five scene points for the sonic youth reference).

I don't even like Sonic Youth, dipshit. I was using some of yer precious sarcasm when writing that post.

the majority of your favorite underground dm bands are going to tell you that the first three metallica records are essential, including your precious hate eternal.

Whatever. Most "dm" bands are also drunken buffoons and speed freaks.

You know what's getting old? Brain-trusts like you who constantly accuse everyone else of trying to be "cool" or "hip" because they don't like the music you like. Guess what? I don't give a fuck what you think of me or any band I may choose to listen to. Get over yourself. The last thing I'd ever want to do is impress someone who writes for Ink19...

For some great James Blood Ulmer, check out Tales of Captain Black.

http://image.allmusic.com/00/amg/cov200/drd700/d766/d76692q674m.jpg

This could actually be considered an Ornette album since it was issued on Ornette's ARTIST HOUSE label. His son, Denardo plays drums, Jamaldeen on bass. The rest of Blood's output is pretty spotty in my opinion.

For Tisziji Munoz, check out the 2CD Spirit World if you can find it. Rashied and Pharoah both play on this along with a pianist and a bassist that I was previously unfamiliar with. Blistering at times, in the style of early-1960s modal Coltrane. Much moreso than the Sonny Sharrock album listed above. Tisziji uses a grittier tone that seems more in tune with this style of music than Sharrock's Ask the Ages sound. Both are great albums in their own right. Sharrock's is just a little more well known.

Are you guys familiar with John Mclaughlin by chance? If not, I would highly recommend a few of his albums!

Good to see these names on the Matador board!

mr. HCI - i agree wholeheartedly that metallica is a silly band name, but consider the time when they formed that name (1981). they probably thought the word was menacing and cool back then, compared to band names like reo speedwagon, blue oyster cult, electric light orchestra... they were clearly unable to see how ridiculous it truly sounded, due to the fact that so many other bands names sucked even worse back then.

by the way, would anyone care to offer up a suggestion for greatest band names ever?

mine are:

- john cougar concentration camp
- teeth of lions rule the divine
- army of ponch

i probably lean toward the first as greatest ever.

Agreed. Most boards like this are indie rock exclusive. I always end up on indie boards because the people there are more likely to be reasonably intelligent and know their stuff, but indie is like 5 or 10 percent of what I actually listen to.

mr. marlowe, I think you would be interested in "Electric Guitarist" if you haven't already given it a listen. This is far and away, in my opinion, McLaughlin's best album. I do like SOME Mahivishnu, but I find the chops often get in the way of my ears.

I think vesper's point is that, despite your annoyance at all the name-dropping, you act like everyone should know who some guy who runs (?) a medium-sized distribution company is and what he looks like.

dirk hemsath is pretty far from being a household name, I think. but then again, maybe I'm not cool enough to know who he is...

bloodflower
08-01-2003, 01:05 PM
take it easy, "tinobeat." all of this foolishness started simply because i like the new metallica record; i was the innocent victim, attacked by a psuedo music know it all who reffered to sonic youth members in a "look how quirky, yet cool, i am" kind of way. it is not i who deserves your pointless stabs.

by the way, it's a shame that dirk hemsath isn't a household name, mainly because he's got a fabulous set of sideburns. really.

p.s. - does "tinobeat" imply masturbatory connotations, or that simply a clever name?

tinobeat
08-01-2003, 01:38 PM
huh, I'll have to make sure I "take it easy" next time.. though I don't see where exactly I was being uneasy. I'll have too look again.

my "stab" (more like a little nudge) actually had a point ("don't get on people for namedropping and then drop names yourself"), and no, you don't deserve any special "victim" status just because Joseph picked on you. Call it a rite of passage. I read the exchange, you fought back hard and snotty enough to lose any "poor little ol' me" pity.

re: ps
well, "bloodflower," tinobeat is a nickname I've had that some how evolved from my real name mashed up and then mixed with the word "Teenbeat." not particularly clever, but then again, I don't really care about sounding clever.
