with or against? perhaps all digital this time around?

i missed the last one, but i am up for re-joining the trade. no opinion here on whether it should be all-digital or not, although the former option might finally force me to get that vinyl-to-mp3 program.
and, without naming names, fiona has suggested that previous deadbeats make good before participating again. just because she's in dublin does not mean she will not hunt you down eventually.

How do you all do this mixtrade anyway? Do you send each other cds in the post or do you upload a zipfile full of mp3s onto one of those file hosting sites?

This is exactly why I'm conflicted about going digital. I enjoy putting the effort into the packaging as much as the musical content, and the anticipation of getting everyone elses in the mail.
On the other hand if it means I get more/all mixes by going digital well I'd have to support that.
How about if peeps who are set on producing/receiving physical copies declare that. If other participants agree to reciprocate in that format, well and good. If not then the option's there to trade digitally if they wish.

I'm in, and this time, I've already got the mix ready to go, so I won't be mailing it six months late. My vote is for digital--I think it'd be cool to see what kind of creative ways people here could come up with to include digital art--although I'm cool with actual CDs sent through the mail as well.
so for digital, it seems as though the following would be useful:
- centralized location for all mbb mixes
- no file size limitations
- no time expiration on storage of files
- fast upload/download
- flexibility to add digital art (good idea, elijah)
we could go with the standard free upload services, though i'm not sure which ones meet all of the requirements above. any suggestions?

I could be all about digital. Knowing my problematic mix-making history, I think taking the "art" and "mailing" steps out would increase my chances of participation big-time!
Hell, as a show of good faith I could even host these on my vast tracts of web space. mmm?

I think the solution here is simple, two groups: one digital and one physical
Elijah
06-18-2007, 01:23 PM
With digital delivery, does the concept of groups kind of get thrown out the window? I mean, everyone who is participating can download everything, if they want to, right? Would it make more sense then to have a release schedule for digital delivery, i.e. everyone checks in when theirs is ready (or sends them to Tino if he decides to host them), and a new mix gets "released" every two or three days?
As for groups, I wouldn't mind sending a physical CD to a few people in my group who insist on it. Lightening the load in cost and labor (i.e sending out two CDs instead of five) should help a lot of people get theirs in on time.
is that what the teams on Survivor do? pull together and work as a team? in that case i think you guys would really put a licking on Tribe Saddle Creek or whoever.

I think that's a fairly good idea in both scope and delivery if we're going to have one big group like the last time out (I believe we had 8 or 9 participants).
If not, I think going digital would be good only if the groups are small. I personally wouldn't listen to a mix I downloaded as much as something I received in the mail... not because of artwork though. Having a physical copy laying around in my car or in any particular area of my house gives me ample more opportunities to listen to a mix in any setting unlike having something on my mp3 player or harddrive. I mean, I still listen to vespers' mix from the fall of '05 once in a while whereas I've only listened to the remix version he made of the same mix he sent digitally two or three times (Sorry!).
Anyway, I'm in no matter what format gets the greenlight.

OK, I have to say it 'cause it's been bugging me:
Unless we do this on vinyl, cassette, shellac disc, wax cylinder or cereal box, it's gonna be digital whether we send the final product via the postal surface or via the ether.

i am definitely one of those, shamefully. in fact, i think i might be a deadbeat from a past round, because i think i sat the last one out for this very reason? i'm not sure. it was/is even ready to burn on my HD ... i'm terrible. i think i owe tony and elijah mixes, and someone else too.

06-25-2007, 07:24 PM
Earl Grey, I may be wrong but I thought you were the victim of other deadbeats in the round prior to last... Maybe I'm getting confused.
Can we all agree to reach a consensus on taking a dual approach to this round to get things moving forward? That being we have two groups, one for soft copies and the other for hard copies, everyone having the option to sign up for one or both?
If we can agree to that, consider my name on both lists (as opposed to The List which Lukas and I are already on).
johansen smith
06-27-2007, 04:52 PM
9000, I don't mean to tell you how to run this, but let me tell you how to run this. If you don't set up a soft date to sign up and a soft date to mail out and a list of participants, this will never ever get off the ground.
oh, i didn't know i was running this thing; was just trying to stir up interest.
that said, if i'm in charge, how about a 7.31 target date?
open issues abound:
- where are we hosting the files for the download group? tinobeat, you got room for us? if not, we can just set up a thread and all plop links from wherever.
- who wants to manage the mailing addresses for the physical/hybrid group? did johansen smith just volunteer for that again? thanks, man. you're the best.
am i missing anything else? probably.

haha, yeah, I think I did. Fiona will get her old mixes with the new one I send her all at once, she is invited to not send my copy of her new mix until she receives hers.
say here if you want to be in the physical group. being in the physical group does not limit your from participating in the digital group, but be aware not all mixes in the physical group will be made available digitally (I can't speak for everyone but mine will not be available outside of the physical realm).

Have you made any forays into learning the language? Celtic languages are no picnic - I always found Irish terribly difficult, and am fairly certain I speak better Spanish.
My great-grandfather was an Irish immigrant into the US, it was very moving to see his name on the wall on Ellis Island. He sold his taxicab business in nyc and moved back to Ireland in the '20s, luckily before the economic downturn. Unfortunately I never met him - he died when I was a few months old, we weren't living in Ireland at the time anyway.

I took Irish for a year in college...terribly difficult (didn't help that I was taking Latin, Greek and German at the same time). Read large portions of "The Islander" which certainly made one appreciate that "The Poor Mouth" was not much of an exaggeration.
Anyway, I'm in for the physical, but I don't have the artistic skills I've seen in some of the prior mix cycles.

Point for clarification - who's overseeing this? I thought it was you 9000, 'til you deftly absolved yourself of responsibility. Or did you?
Not that I've changed address or anything, but other people may have, and first-time participants will have to contact someone to pass on details.
So in the interests of clarity, who da man?
that must be a rhetorical question.
i was assuming JS was asking for the physical participants in order to determine whom to send the personally identifiable info he already has on file. it's not clear that digital only need to speak up, since it's just a matter of posting up a link for all to download.

You and those rhetorical questions which are in fact the opposite.
I did say before that I'd be happier sharing with fellow participants, rather than anyone who happens to coast by*. It's not meant as a selfish stance, rather an acknowledgment and reciprocation of mutual effort.
Don't know how anyone else feels about that?
*of course, not everyone who coasts by may want to download my mix, but it's the principle. I'm full of them these days.

We need a repository from which to source them, and another to host them in the first instance.
Sites like YSI and sendspace cause a problem as there are expiry dates and download limits to contend with. Any suggestions for alternatives?
An offer was made by at least one participant to host on their own site - still open?

I've been using divshare.com If you actually have an account, the files you host don't expire.
so, perhaps isolated thread for mixes only + divshare for file hosting.

Sorry 'bout that. I'll send you another disc tomorrow.
It looks as if I stupidly burned a few of those discs in Disc Simulation Mode, which means a few people are going to get blank discs. Just PM me if you're one of those people, and I'll send you a *real* one.
I really feel like a douche bag.

Maybe they're all hidden tracks? They were part of a limited edition, and only came on the first four copies. Kind of a problem, since I had to mail out eight discs.

I'll second that!
Speaking of seconds - I put it on earlier and stepped out to the kitchen briefly, as the second track was starting up. I could sort of hear it and thought "I know that song...". Followed by "AHA!" :D

Mine should be out by the end of this week or early next week.

Finalized my two mixes... yes two mixes, not really a 2 CD mix as much as just two different mixes (15 tr/48 mins + 12 tr/63 mins). Pretty sure I've still yet to repeat an artist from any previous mix, but I don't really remember what I put on the 2nd MBBMix, so who can say. Will be shipping them out early next week after a long period of burning 18 CD-Rs.... Preview of packaging for those who dare: http://img167.imageshack.us/img167/1476/matamix5el4.jpg
My four disc boxed (well banded) set arrived! I've got a lot of listening to do. One small request. Track listing please?

I don't know if everyone figured this out, but I'm not sure ShadySides is still with us. Tho it's too late for Fiona/Elijah, I would strongly recommend not sending ShadySides your mix until you receive one from him first. This is not me calling him a deadbeat, just that his complete absence from the thread makes me cautious.

just to let everyone know, i am really sorry that my mixes have not gone out yet. each week of school has managed to be a more perfect storm than the last (this week being the very worst), but it hasn't been so bad that i've completely forgotten about the mixes. i need a couple more songs to finish off the last 10% of the tracklist, so hopefully i can get them out by the end of next week. again, really sorry! hopefully my laborious process will produce a large surplus of enjoyment in the end.

I did not. Then again, I've not sent out mine yet . . . as they're not done. I have next week off, though, and will be working diligently on them then.
So far, I have received mixes from Elijah, Fiona and Futureman. Since mine are not done, though, I have not opened the packages yet out of guilt.

anyone, even those individuals who didn't participate with their own mixes, can upload to or download from the digital thread. i think that's a great thing. if you'd rather only share with people who send you discs, then i guess that's how it will be for you. personally, i think it would be nice if the physicals made their mixes available for everyone to download even if they're not always getting something in return, but to each his or her own.

i don't think there should be mix format requirements. if people want to combine their tracks or keep them separate, it should make no difference.

I agree. To each there own. I mean, it is their mix. I hope you didn't find my comment a complaint 9000, it wasn't. I believe, especially with mix tapes that the packaging, assembly, artwork have also as much to do with the tape, as the mix itself. I have no problems listening to files of music, I actually do it several times daily. The fact that I can hold something that someone else created means so much more. If you or anyone created something for me I would appreciate it no matter what the form or contents contained. Even if it where all old Belle Biv Devoe and Boys II Men* tracks. It has been a long time since I have heard that shit.
*Please don't.
