pole "2" has firmly established itself into to my late night stereo rotation. given their (his) alumni status, what other related releases do the matadorians suggest?

1 and 3 are also excellent, you should check out those as well. i haven't heard his new one but it's supposed to be really different. less sparse and not as dubby i think.

no one else really has that same crackly sound, but monolake is similar - the album "hong kong" is very good. also, the clicks n cuts series on mille plateaux is all in that vein - good for hearing a lot of different artists at once.

burger/ink (to keep it in the matador family) is close too - a warmer, dancier sound (though still very chill). las vegas is a great, great late night album. gas and the modernist are both burger/ink offshoots - neither are as good in my opinion, but still worth hearing....

earl,

got pole 3 today and am thoroughly enjoying it. will try to get 1 soon.

his new mute album doesn't quite hit the mark like his previous releases did. guest vocalists only get in the way and the beats seem tamer in comparision.

the first disc of "branches and routes" - a kinda new fatcat records compilation - is also great for things along this vibe. introduced me to process, duplo remote, stromba, and some others. the second disc is different, but is also good - much more rock. but the best bit is that the set was only $10 at other music....

a few weeks ago, i worked my way backwards to the begining of the trilogy and finally got pole 1. god, i love these three albums. it is weird cause i remember being in this great bar in berlin in '98 and hearing this wonderful distorted sound that i'm now certain had to be from pole 1. reunited at last.

how is the "r" album? is it just an EP of remixes or a full-blown effort in the vein of 1,2, and 3?

Senking, perhaps? He's German and glitch-y. Probably closer to the first Pole album. MP3: http://www.raster-noton.de/fpx/cdr035track01.mp3

the r LP is all remixes of the same song, though they're varied enough that it's not blaringly obvious. in fact, i probably wouldn't have picked up on it if i wasn't told. pole does a few himself, kit clayton i think does 2. some of it's pretty good, some is OK. i think it suffers when it moves away from the crackly sound to a cleaner production. his songs are so sparse that the pops and crackles really hold them together. so some tracks work really well, others feel empty. it's an interesting listen, though probably the least essential of the 4.

i've never heard the latest (45/45 i think it's called), but he apparently totally revamped his sound (to mixed results).

funk, thanks for the senking mp3. i'm digging it.

earl, the new pole CD has a tough time following 1,2,3. the sound is more predictable and more than half the songs have vocals, which sound like dated giant step jazzy rap stuff from the early 90's. a couple of the instrumental songs are okay though.

9000,

There's a few more MP3s on that Raster-Noton site, but you gotta dig around for 'em.

Until my computer crashed, I had some really great MP3s from a Pole/Four Tet remix release, where they worked on each other's material. I'd recommend tracking that down.

pole vs. four tet! now THAT sounds awesome. i hope four tet packages all of his remixes into a tidy compilation at some point ... i always seem to be stumbling onto new ones.

das ist gut, herr funk.

thanks for turning me onto raster-noton. there are lots of hot mp3s burried on the site, for sure. some of the stuff is really out there though, and quite frankly, scary as all shit. sort of what i imagine i'll hear after they come to take me away.

danke

Earl Grey,

Here's a link to the Four Tet VS Pole release. Appears to be vinyl only (or the CD has gone out of print). They have Real Audio samples: http://www.posteverything.com/artists/release.php?id=155
