This was a very weird concert.

First of all, she was her own opening act, rapping? She was pretty good at it, but it just seemed totally weird and out of place.

Second of all, Chan's best instrument has always been her voice. The 'Band, I think, really drowned her out. I miss the days of Chan's stunning voice with simple background.

Overall, worst Cat Power I've seen. But I guess all music must progress. I'll still hold on to "Chan Classic".

If they turned it down a bit it would be better.

To be clear, Chan did not open her show in disguise rapping. That would be Addiquit.

Insofar as technical issues, her mic went out at the beginning 'Could We', but she was able to manage singing with the keyboardist's mic until they hooked up one that worked. Since a lot of electronic/dj acts come through, the sound at Avalon isn't suited to subtlety. The mixing did get better as the show went on.

Despite those technical quibbles, Cat Power and Dirty Delta came through with a great show. From the blues to a rousing 'Satisfaction', they performed well. And although, Chan never got behind a piano or guitar, she performed a number of songs where it was just her or the guitarist/keyboard. Her voice was at its best in these sparse moments.

I have noticed-with the myspace page- that the person who runs it like to refer to himself and the d.d.b.b as Cat Power. Like they are part of Cat Power and not just her backing band. he also likes to use the CP name and her site as a way to push d.d.b.b. solo efforts. maybe I'm just being a snot or whatever but it is all about Chan aka Cat Power. and not this d.d.b.b.

well it`s not even ddbb events he`s pushing- its usually his solo shit/ djing he`s pushing, which, yes, is pretty lame. I get excited every time i see a cat power posting and then it`s nothing but a let down.

that, and he`s trying way too hard to be scene.

This was posted on MySpace, as a bulletin from Cat Power:

Title: "Bonus track in Blog today . and more

Body:
Cat Power's gregg foreman (Rx) has new song in the Pharmacy blog
go give a listen ..
+ article by
Creation Records Alan Mcgee on echo and the bunnymen
+ plenty of cat power photos and things ... what are you waiting for ?

Go Now . Leave a comment The Pharmacy"

Fuckin lame. When I notice a bulletin from Cat Power, I wouldn`t mind it being about Cat Power. I get rather excited when I see "Bonus track" and Cat Power, so it`s rather annoying finding some dude hawkin his own shit

Yeah I agree man, it is a downer.

Is there some differentiation between Cat power and the dirty delta blues band? Because I always thought Chan was Cat power, all on her lonesome and the band was a seperate entity.

I think the guy who plays the keyboards is trying to muscle in a little too much.

 ha ha. I totally agree! and I fell for that bulletin too. got all excited when I saw it. even though we had discussed it here previously-I still got my hopes up.
using Cat Power to promote his own dumb website. I bet Chan doesn't know anything about it either.

I hope this band doen't eff up 'Covers 2'!

I give full credit to Jimi White.
He is a special and really individualistic drummer, who of course has worked with Chan before. So in regards to the new Covers record, I dont know much about the other members of Dirty Delta, particualry the keyboardist, but you know with Jim White your getting high quality playing that does fit with Chan's distinctive sound.

Personally Im looking forward to the new record. We'll finally get to hear her singing on these songs.

I think becase of Judah Bauer he's having to curb some of that individualism on these songs. On this stuff he's playing more 4/4 driving beats which is pretty much necessary cause Judah's playing rock riffs. With the Dirty Three and on Moon Pix Jim played this real loose, spacey stuff that didnt drive the songs. Theyre definitely going for a more straightforward rock n' roll sound on these songs (just look at the new version of "Satisfaction") which is something Cat Power the recording/live entity has never been known for before.

I just hope Chan doesnt just start making really straightforward, normal sounding music from now on. Will we ever get the bassless threepieces ever again?

Well yeah, Jim has a style, as you said that is spacey, loose and atmospheric. I think that it is disappointing that he has to curb what makes his drumming so brilliant on the Dirty Three records and which does really compliment Chan's previous "bassless" compositions.
I completely forgot that Judah was also in Dirty Delta, which with his previous record in the Blues Explosion; it is reasonable to affirm him as a really good guitarist. But with this driving rock sound, I think as you said it is something that Chan and Jim White hasn't really laid down on a record, especially with the potential commercial success that Covers 2 may have after the suprising (yet not suprising) appeal of The Greatest.
However, I do like the fact that Chan is trying to do something new to her, that even though it may appear to be straightfoward, with her unique stamp I have no doubt that it will be something to behold.
I think it would be wrong for her to try and remain stagnant, and since she is such a big fan of the mighty Bob Dylan it becomes somewhat understandable.
The Times They Are a-Changin', and she quite obviously is too.

I couldn`t agree more, and I have faith enough in Chan to keep it, well, "Chan-ish". She`s got class and style.

I would love to hear Chan sing some real filthy blues, or actually any traditional guitar driven blues. I think her unique interpretation style would really lend itself to something like that.

Bones, is it really wise to post personal correspondence with somebody on a public forum even if it does add something to the topic?

Why not discuss it with him privately? Our opinions and critiques as fans won't be taken seriously if we act all silly about it. Why should he listen to us if we're just going to act childish about it all?

Having said all that he's being pretty ridiculous himself by suggesting that because we're fans that means we should just shut the fuck up and say nothing and never criticise.

fact of the matter is that the personal pushing has stopped. that`s that, and i think it would be good if this thread ended here
