This album has got to be one of the best albums I have heard in at least 5 years. I think it will stand the test of time and be as essential as albums like "SLanted and Enchanted" "Doolittle" "OK Computer" "Bee Thousand" etc. I really do think it is that good!
It will be really interesting to see how their second full length will compare.
Just a thought.

I like that album a lot, don't get me wrong, but I don't see it becoming canonical in any way. Its a bit too reserved in its own way, and too strict in its aesthetic. The albums you listed are for the most part far more freewheeling and varied. I don't know if that makes sense, but it does to me.
then again, its useless to speculate on what will be the classics of the future. We'll have to wait until the future...

You haven't heard a lot of albums in the past five years, have you?

I wouldn't call any of those records essential -- in fact, I don't even currently own any of 'em -- I'd call them annoyingly overhyped by people who really ought to know better. Shee-it, I'd rather listen to the Singles soundtrack on a loop until the end of time than darken my CD player with anything by Guided By Budweiser...
Here's my prediction: The whole world will have forgotten about Interpol by the time I have finished typing out this response.

You are ridiculous.

Why? Because I haven't fallen in line with the rest of you? Because I have taste?
Do you honestly think anyone will give a fuck about Interpol in ten years?
joe,
out of curiousity, what are people with taste listening to these days?

Go back and listen to Bon Jovi. I'm sure that is more your style.

The name is Joseph. And you would be "asshole," yes?
Give me just enough respect to call me by my Christian name when you ask yer silly questions and maybe I'll give you the time o' day.
Go back and listen to Bon Jovi. I'm sure that is more your style.
Ouch! I'll be feeling that one come tomorrow morning!

Anyone who would rather listen to the soundtrack from Singles rather than Guided by Voices is simply a regular ol' Joe.
And while it's true Interpol may not be remembered in five years time, they'll indeed be remembered long after you decide to no longer darken this board with your opinions.
But since you'll surely continue responding--we expect nothing less from a regular ol' Joe such as youself--please do enlighten us nimrods who have no taste, who fall in line with the hoi polloi: What SHOULD we be listening to these days?
(Please oh GOD please don't say the Explosing Hearts.)

funny you should say that, Sue, cos Joseph's been an active participant in this bulletin board, its fake counterpart, and its predecessor for over 5 years now.
longevity isn't something he should be worried about as much.

so you're conceding your snobbiness with that one, eh? The funny thing is, though "Susans" listen to GbV and plain ol' "Sues" listen to the Singles Soundtrack, GbV is nothing if not a band made up of regular "Joes," like, um, Bob (I guess his less-plain counterpart, Robert Pollard, is saved for solo material?). gauging sophistication can be pretty hard, I guess...

Ok, Joe or Joseph, whatever you want to be called. What are some of your favorite bands or albums? I'm just curious. I see that you continue to bash Matador artists such as Interpol or GBV...why even be on this board?
You must be one of those kids that got picked on a lot in school and the wounds still hurt. Gotta pick, pick, pick.
I'm sure you will respond with some clever little response to this that only shows your true self (true maybe isn't the right word here).
Enough said.

Perhpaps Joseph just needs a hug. His disdain for great artists like GBV and Interpol notwithstanding, his elitist opinions and vile attitude are his perogative. Let's let him be. Have you been to the man's website? God has punished him more than we ever could with our rightfully indignant responses.

Sue, let me introduce you to my friend, Mr. Sarcasm.

Don't hate, congratulate.
What SHOULD we be listening to these days?
I can't say I care what y'all listen to.
(Please oh GOD please don't say the Explosing Hearts.)
I have no idea what the "Explosing [sic?] Hearts" are. Are they anything like Mars Volta?
What are some of your favorite bands or albums?
If I said "Washing Machine," "Kill the Moonlight" and "Crooked Rain Crooked Rain," would you change yer mind about me?
I see that you continue to bash Matador artists such as Interpol or GBV...why even be on this board?
This may shock you, but Interpol and Guided By a Great Yawning Void aren't the only two artists on Matador's roster...they might be the worst artists on Matador's roster, though.
You must be one of those kids that got picked on a lot in school and the wounds still hurt. Gotta pick, pick, pick.
Oh my God, you have read me like a book! It's like you've known me my whole life!
I'm sure you will respond with some clever little response to this that only shows your true self (true maybe isn't the right word here).
No, I think you showed your true self when you mocked my love of Bon Jovi, you fuckin' hypocrite.
Perhpaps Joseph just needs a hug.
Yes, I would like one.
His disdain for great artists like GBV and Interpol notwithstanding, his elitist opinions and vile attitude are his perogative.
Why, cos they're not the same as your opinions and "vile attitude"? Take a look around and realize that you're not the center of the universe, asshole. Not everyone thinks like you do, thankfully.
Have you been to the man's website? God has punished him more than we ever could with our rightfully indignant responses.
Where's the logic here? God "punished" me when he helped me self-publish a book and then build a website to promote it? And, if I'm such an asshole, then why even look at my website in the first place? Cos you're full o' shit, that's why.
"Rightfully indignant"...goodness!

although i'm not a matador employee, could someone please close this thread? this sort of babble is better suited for vicious emails or weblogs or listservs. the recent spate of flaming coincides with the closure of the school year and i wish you all could continue to channel your alienation into the enterprises that keep you busy, or at least constructive in your free time.
isn't this what fakejazz's message board is for?

I bet you one thousand greenbacks that every person who has posted to this thread is a college graduate. That's where the tragedy comes in, my little friend.
Sit back, toss some Arab Strap onto the old turntable and relax, brother. Or just do something crazy and stop reading the threads that you don't find "constructive."
Take care.
