View Full Version : Stream Cat Power covering Bob Dylan on Myspace
So this isn't Jukebox related, but as you may or may not have known, Cat Power's on the soundtrack of Todd Haynes' new Bob Dylan sorta-biopic "I'm Not There." She does a cover of "Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again," admittedly great, that you can stream on myspace (http://www.myspace.com/imnottheresoundtrack).
For the record, this double-disc soundtrack features a healthy selection of Matador Artists (kinda like the "I shot Andy Warhol" soundtrack--60's covers in an arty period picture and the Mata-lineup is so there) including Yo La Tengo and Stephen Malkmus.

Great version. Was that recorded at the Jukebox sessions? It sounds brilliant, very bombastic for Cat Power.:)
Yeah this is surprising. It sounds almost the same as the original version. I'm not too crazy about it but it's still cool.

That's my problem with it too, the best covers re-imagine the song, not present a carbon copy.

Doesnt the bigness of it just grab ya JS?
Yeah, what made the first Covers record a classic was her reinterpretation of the songs on nearly every level. That Blonde on Blonde era (and on) vocal styling launched a million caricatures and made for great karaoke, but I was expecting something, you know, different than how faithful it turned out to be.

I really enjoyed it.
The sound is fresh, and I suppose in many ways staying close to the original (which is brilliant) she is doing something differant from what she usually does, in which she totally makes over the song.

It's not just that it sounds like a carbon copy of the original. She sounds like she's singing karaoke; like she's reading the words off a screen (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=19vt0TLnSfo). As for the music, it reminds me of the band that played on the Bob Dylan 30th Anniversary Tribute Concert CD (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_30th_Anniversary_Concert_Celebration) that came out a while ago. There's not a wrong note anywhere to be found, but it doesn't sound particularly inspired either.

I cannot believe you all. Just because someone once upon a time made a record of covers that had about as much in common with the originals as the Cistern Chapel does with a public shithouse she's forever obligated to radically reinvent every song she performs from then on.
Can't you just enjoy it for what it is?

A cistern chapel and a public shithouse probably have a lot more in common than you realise... ;)

Why listen to someone imitate Bob Dylan when I can just listen to Bob Dylan? The purpose of a cover is to re-imagine or reinterpret, not reiterate the original song. I know Sufjan's not real popular on this board but listen to his song on the MySpace to see what a cover should sound like.

I wish there was a rolling on the floor with laughter emoticon Fiona cause you're a funny one.:)

Exactly. Especially the voice effects, the first thing you think of by listening to the cover is "oh someone trying to imitate Bob Dylan...hmmm...ok"
I mean, it's not bad, I just can't recognize Chan's touch on this one.

I do like Sufjan, a lot. His cover is just awesome, I was impressed.
