not really, but kind of. i have some friends who want to organize a daytime show/party at south by southwest 2004. most of us are trying to be realistic and are envisioning mostly small-time bands playing at our show, but let us dream: what would it take to get a "matador caliber" band to play? if we had a good performace place and plenty of beer and food, what are the chances of that happening? any advice from anyone is appreciated.

money's all you need, really. if you got a couple grand to pay a band, you can get 'em to play anywhere. The joy of booking shows at Tufts was that we could have college money pay for bands, so we could get Les Savy Fav to play in a tiny living room at a party...
so yeah, if you have like 5 grand, I bet even the Jicks would play yr party.

sxsw is a little different. the bands are already in town, so a lot of them play day shows for free. maybe "matador-level" bands make you pay them. i guess that's what i'm trying to find out. i mean, we can get a bunch of good but smaller bands to play (little wings and carissa's wierd are two that we could most likely get... maybe the shins), but it would be nice to have just one higher-profile band to attract attention, since we'll be competing with literally hundreds of other day shows.

I talked to Jason Simon of Dead Meadow in Brooklyn last weekend. Sounds to me like they want to play wherever, whenever and loud. He asked me if I knew anyone at Matador (ha) and if I could talk to them about getting more shows.
Another thread perhaps, but you may want to look into them. Definitely worth your time!
Happy Birthday!
