The New Pornographers Christmas single is out on Tuesday on iTunes:

1. The Spirit of Giving (from the 'Challengers' album)
2. Joseph (new original song)
3. Arms of Mary - Looking at a Baby (new, medley of Chilliwack and Collectors covers)

That's Tuesday, November 27.

So, buyearlygetnow.com says the b-side posted today is the last one, which indicates that these b-sides aren't going to be included. If so, I've got to say that's kinda crappy, because we were promised: "The Executive Edition is for the completists because every b-side, every demo, every alternate mix, every video, and every photo associated with the release of 'Challengers' will eventually be made available for download."

Seems to be that, seeing how the lead track is from 'Challengers', you really can't claim that the b-sides aren't 'associated with the release of Challengers'. So what's up?

Be de leppin' jaysus some people are hard to please. On that note what I would like to know is will this be available on 7" at some point, please.

I just prefer not to be lied to, that's all. If you specifically claim that EVERY B-SIDE will be included, and then you don't include two of them, that's hardly very honest, is it?

Promises will not be broken. Life progresses, and nobody anticipated the band recording 2 Christmas songs at the last moment. All BEGN subscribers will get 'em. No fears.

Thanks. I take back what I said (and all the nasty things I was thinking, too). Was it just a weird coincidence that the scheduled last b-side posted the same time this news broke?

You probably ought to remove the note that says "It's now safe to burn the B-Side disc", since it's no longer true.

Hi ANEWMAN35...

We're not going to change the language, since these are post-campaign MP3s, not intended for the BEGN box, but delivered to subscribers as an unforeseen bonus.

Given how prolific Carl is as a composer and musician, there's gonna be a constant flow of new music over the next year, in fits and starts, often unexpectedly. While we pledge to take care of our BEGN subscribers with access to the music, it's too confusing for most people to have the burn timeline repeatedly revised, and will create more problems than it solves.

So the box will remain the size and shape it was originally planned to be. Of course if anyone chooses to wait to burn the late extras to it, that's their decision!

I'm confused so sorry if this is a dumb question.

I didn't subscribe to BEGN (seemed a bit complicated for me I thought, as I live in the UK and I went to Canada shortly after the record was released, so bought it out there as it was cheaper). I got the Executive edition, though. What's the difference between that and BEGN? Will these B-sides end up being made available for download on the Exec site too? I think you might have sort of answered my question already but I'm not sure so would appreciate it if you could confirm. I was about to burn the CD but don't mind waiting! :cool:

Thanks for the clarification, Patrick. I'll be getting my extras tonight, then. :)

It is a brilliant idea, by the way. I will ALWAYS want to buy a CD (I like physical copies that I can have in my hand or on the shelf or whatever) and something like the Executive Edition really suits me as a completist!

OK, I'm confused. I go to http://www.lastgangrecords.com/thenewpornographers/ and put in my code and these b sides are not there?

The buyearlygetnow.com site I cannot log into with that passcode (it is the number that was written on my exec edition cd).

Are they definitely the same thing?

Last Gang is only for Canadian customers - buyearlygetnow is for rest of the world.

Yes, the login should be the code in your box.

Ah, that makes sense because I bought the CD when I was on holiday in Toronto. The last time that site was updated was 31st October.

If you have a Canadian copy, you may have to contact the folks at Last Gang.

OK - will do. To be honest, I don't mind paying an extra few pounds if necessary so hopefully can sort something out with someone. It looks like the Last Gang site does not have everything the Matador one does.

Yesterday I saw 4 copies of Challengers: Executive Edition for sale at my local HMV store. It's selling for 3$ more than the normal format, but any sucker who buys it will be stuck with three blank disks and no password to access the BEGN website and retrieve the bonus songs... Does anyone know how or why those EE copies ended up in music stores?

Yeah, that's exactly what I did. I'm having no problems with my version I bought.
