Movie? great. Music? terrible! I hope the dvd comes with the option to turn off all the Kimya Dawson.
It's sort of funny to hear the songs that are in the movie on the soundtrack and see how whoever edited them for the film cut out the most cringe-inducing lines. I was watching the movie was like, "This is a lot less annoying that I remember Kimya Dawson being"-- and then I heard the whole songs and was like, "Oh right."

The new year turned as we were playing poker and listening to Marquee Moon, and then the first thing we listened to as we made Huevos Rancheros this morning was Disciples of California by The Skygreen Leopards.

I then spent a lot of time working on fun stuff in silence in my basement, so that's all I've got for now!

Drugstore - White Magic for Lovers

Silver Jews Tanglewood Numbers

I always hoped this would grow on me. Alas, it hasn't.

Here are the tunes that ushered in Futurefamily's new year:

Pavement - Crooked Rain x 2 (expanded, disc 1)
Public Image Ltd. - Don't Ask Me (imported ep)<--yuck
Rolling Stones - Out of Our Heads lp
Jesu - Conqueror
Spoon - Series of Sneaks
Johannes Brahms - Piano Concerto No. One in D Minor (Pierre Monteux conducting the London Symphony) lp <--a great recording, but I can't take the emotionally bloated nature of (most) Romantic music for too long.

Jeff Lewis - live stuff and old recordings I just found online
Vomit Launch - Not Even Pretty (been looking for this for a while)

Tanglewood Numbers did finally grow on me in the sense that I can now actively enjoy it instead of actively hate it like I did when I first heard it. But its still only a B/B+ of an album. A for effort, but the execution leaves something to be desired for me...

Broadcast - The Future Crayon just finished playing.

Me too. Feels good to be done with it. What kinda books? Maybe a trade.

Tino what were you doing in the basement? Painting i hope.

Books - Lost and Safe
Duke Ellington - Great Paris Concerts
Fall - Grotesque
Eternals - Black museum
Guided by Voices - Under the bushes

Also saw Juno and Eastern Promises. My GF and I didn't really mind mocking the Kimya Dawson songs by singing them off key and pluralizing every noun and adjective as we were leaving the theatre. I think everyone thought we were retarded. The movie was good though. She was far too cool for a 16 year old. And the first five minutes of dialogue made me skeptical of the movies integrity. The first ten minutes or so really are so bad, it's sort of amazing how quickly it turns everything around. I disagree about her being too cool for a 16 year old and that's been a major thing I've had to defend this movie on-- I was definitely dating this girl when I was in high school, it's not even remotely implausible.

Also I don't know why I thought it was a good idea not to sell back my textbooks. Who wants two hundred pounds of textbooks?

Still going strong

Yes, all of this is true. I knew girls exactly like this in high school. As for the first ten minutes being bad, I even reversed my opinion on that by the end of the film. It's really just a crash course in the personality of the character and a blueprint for the bubble world in which the film exists.

I'm able to forgive her behavior/dialog at the beginning since she grows and it's intentionally obnoxious, but I think nothing short of a Papal decree can absolve Rainn Wilson's cameo

I wonder if that's a permanent price tag or an "introductory" price that's been pretty common lately (even Matador did it with Interpol when the debut came out, if I recall...)

johansen smith

I think what happens is that these "big box" stores "predict" the massive sales of these albums and tell the record company that they will purchase, say 20,000 copies, but want 22,000 for that price. Thus allowing them to drop their cost by 10% and able to then undercut everyone that isn't able to purchase that quantity i.e. your local indie record store. I kinda wish that they would have only sold to indie stores or as the online download/discobox. I am not sure, but I can't imagine Radiohead making much money from the "big box" sales. I am sure the did, will do better from the online sales in December. Anyway.

Jay Reatard - Blood Visions CD
The Black Angels - Passover CD
Bilderine - Split Seconds CD
Raven - Back to Ohio Blues LP <- it's great to finally own this one! but what gives with the horrible new cover art?
The Thai Orchestra - The Thai Orchestra LP
Various Artists - Last Kind Words LP
Various Artists - Black Mirror: Reflections in Global Musics CD
Various Artists - Victrola Favorites: Artifacts from Bygone Days 2CD

Those last two are the latest Dust-To-Digital compilations and they are fantastic! Fans of Yazoo's Secret Museum of Mankind series would really dig them and the packaging for Victrola Favorites is stunning.

13.98 list means approximately $9 wholesale before distribution fee (which is usually 12-14% for the majors), so when Target sells for $7, someone's losing money somewhere.

No, they pay the regular amount (This is a simplified version of a much longer answer, but this topic has been covered to death here and elsewhere) and lose $$ on the sale because they (correctly) figure that folks will be walking out of the store with something besides just the new Radiohead record. Also I'd be willing to bet that a significant percentage of Radiohead's sales come from "big box" sales.

I know retail does loss leaders, but I guess I always figured there were different approaches for online stores-- after all, if Amazon is selling In Rainbows for $7 too, there seems less a guarantee that the customer will fell compelled to purchase something else-- is there a cheaper wholesale price for online stores/do they pay less anyways... could Amazon have cut a deal with the label for a cheaper wholesale price?

Too true! I bought a tube of Burt's Beeswax Lip Balm at BestBuy the other day when I went in to pick up the new Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings CD for $7.99. The lip balm kicks ass all over Chapstik and Carmex, BTW.

Amazon has the bonus of free shipping if you spend at least $25 (not counting stuff from third-party sellers), so I'm sure they're betting on large numbers of people picking at least $17.01 in other merchandise when buying the new Radiohead for $7.99.

Is that the solid stick? It's lovely and zingy, but I didn't like the coating it left. J&J does a great balm which is you'll find in the sun care range. It's very moisturising, is not sticky and doesn't leave residue. Products thread, anyone?

i feel really trashy sayin' it, but "do you what you want (infusion's sky mix)" is unbelievably good, especially in the context of the james holden mix. i'm not usually into house tracks that rely too heavily on vocals- and goddamn does this one ever- but this could rival ewan pearson's goldfrapp, royksopp and cortney tidwell mixes for excellence in vocal incorporation & deployment, if only there were such an award.

Headlights: Some Racing, Some Stopping I've had a lot of problems with their earlier releases, which never played to this band's strengths. Though it's doubtful they'll ever match their achievement as Absinthe Blind, this is the first thing these former members have done since that that seems like they know what they're doing. There is some irresistible, catchy pop at work here that never overextends itself. I haven't heard the TNV yet (actually waiting for it and Cat Power to be released-- I'm so 90s!), but this is the first great thing I've heard this year.

UGH, I'm sorry, man. I've avoided those pressings for that very reason. I don't think its a RULE that recent pressings of classic albums suck, but its a risk you have to deal with. Generally, any reissue that touts itself as a "collectors edition on colored vinyl" is best left on the shelves. They're clearly spending more energy on making it look "cool" or "collectable" or whatever the fuck good colored vinyl does in the world and not getting a good sounding record out of it.

I bought a recent *mono* reissue of VU & Nico and I was skeptical, but I really wanted to have a mono LP version of the LP (until I have the $$$ for an OG copy, this'll do) and it sounds pretty good to my ears. I don't know if its the same people who do the other recent colored reissues...

I tend to only buy LP reissues of albums there's NO CHANCE IN HELL of me getting an OG copy of, otherwise I'll happily spend a little more time and efort to get an original (up to, say $20-30, depending on the importance of the record to me), even if its a little rough around the edges. These Scorpio reissues and other kind of dodgy pressings (like whoever let "Dr. John The Night Stripper" pass on the label of my so-so reissue of Gris-Gris) tend to be overpriced and not up to par, quality-wise, both in packaging and sound. Exceptions tend to be companies I trust, like Sundazed or Plain or something, who are clearly authorized, loving, and fastidious about making the reissues wonderful (and they generally tend to do this to albums I have no chance in hell of getting originals of).

recent *mono* reissue of VU & NicoHow stark are the differences between the mono and stereo versions? I've considered getting the 2CD collector's edition of this for a while, because I've heard that the mono version on the second CD is a warmer mix.

Great post tino, totally on the money. If you can get a slightly beat-up original it will nearly always beat the pants off a new reissue, for all kinds of reasons.

I don't know Tino, Scorpio may not be much in the lavish packaging dept, but they certainly are not overpriced, and while I don't think I'd go on record as saying that any of them sound amazing I also don't think any of the ones I own sound too bad to own. Most Scorpio reissues are in stores from the $9/$10 to $14 at the most. When you put that up against folks in the same grey area of reissues like Arkarama, Tapestry, Radioactive (where you're automaticly looking at $20 or more) I'd take a Scorpio pressing any day.

Yeah, that was just the first name that came to mind, but you're right about the price, and I should have replaced that with any of the others you listed. I've just come to associate Scorpio reissues with cheapie cover scanning and pressing, so even $10 seems like a lot sometimes, but that's a different sort of thing. But indeed, the Radioactive ones are rough (especially considering how legally tenuous they are in the first place)...

possibly. i really have no idea what's hard to find in that world. someone please tell me i have a mickey mantle rookie card sitting under a pile of dust...

there was a great weekly show on upsala college (WFMU now) that turned me on to some cool stuff. and uncle flloyd. also, J&R records had a nifty punk/other vinyl section way back in the day that i used to randomly pick from. i guess i sort of lapsed on the scene.

My guess would be-- just based on how old the records are (we're talking 20 years ago!), and how few indie/punk records were pressed in the '80s compared to the rate they're released now-- that even if you blindly bought random junk at the time, they're ALL going to be interesting at this point, and at least half of 'em are gonna be rarities on some scale or another, I'd bet.

not safe at all. they're all EPs and LPs. at age 13, 14, i really didn't see the point in owning a record for just two songs, and i'm pretty much still of that mindset today. (ducks down)

Same here, Summer 2005, the day before I moved from Boston to Florida. And I sold it (well, 80% of it) for a lot less than it was worth. Getting the whole thing into a moving van just wasn't an option, sadly. And yes, I miss a lot of it. Not a week goes by where I don't think of something that I used to have an original vinyl pressing of. As happy as I am to get a used CD copy of Never Mind the Bollocks for $5-, it's not quite the same thing as having the original LP.

I think I saw them on that tour but I'm not positive. I saw 'em four times and the Obsession, No Place to Run and Mechanix tours are definites. I know the other time was also w/Chapman on guitar so it was most likely the TWtWatI tour. They were killer every time, of course.

Gore

Holy sh*t, GORE! I'd forgotten all about them... how stupid of me, too..

I had "Hart Gore" way back when, and I remember it being really awesome; brutal, heavy instrumentals, but it came with a lyric sheet-- totally f'ed-up lyrics, too, very descriptive, even though there was no singing on the record. What a great record that was. I think I'm gonna have to try to hunt some of their stuff down now, and re-acquaint myself with them.

EDIT: Someone had Gore "Hart Gore" posted on GEMM for a mere $5.74, so I snapped it right up. I'm a happy puppy...

Yes, you do. Have you heard the Salmon album? Or have I asked you before? It's Kim's instrumental guitar army thing (seven guitars, two drummers, sampler) and is pretty cool.

Black Lips & Subsonics Live at The Clermont Lounge split EP
More info please! Is the Clermont Lounge the ultra scary stripper bar? I saw the Subsonics and the Cynics there once. Fantastic show.
Yes, it is. So scary, in fact, that I've never been there (there's also the fact that they stopped having regular shows there probably close to 10 years ago). I was actually planning on going to the show where this was recorded but ended up going out of town to a weekend family reunion with the would-be-in-laws (I had a great time, so I'm not bitter). Each band gets two songs and the record is limited to 2,000 copies. It's on the ATL label Rob's House Records and they do mail order. http://www.robshouserecords.com/

Brownsville Station School Punks
They're the Kings of the Party, the baddest people alive!
You are correct, sir! We were at the beach for a few days when KotP was a hit when I was a kid and I heard it over-and-over again. It took me a dozen or so years to find out it was on School Punks and I bought it immediately. Actually, now that I think about it, I think the record store manager just gave it to me 'cause I was so excited to find it. He also gave me lyric sheets from a few Beefheart albums in the collector bin, since my copies didn't have 'em.

Kelly Stoltz - Circular Sounds CD <-- nice! the guy I think only I love surpasses his last album which, again, I think only I love.
Yet you don't love him enough to spell his name correctly? :p Anyhow, wrong on both counts. I don't have the new album yet (it's not yet on the streets, right?) but I've got the "Your Reverie" 45 and the chorus pops in my head regularly. I've got several other things, as well, and love 'em all. And I want everything I still don't have (which I think is one CD and one 7", maybe).

Oh come on! Yeah yeah, Kelley not Kelly... haha. But seriously. I've bee sweating this guy hard for a coupla years, since I got the Antique Glow LP (though I haven't been vocal about it on the board) and this new album is just sick. I figured the lack of attention made me that guy privately loving all his shit. I'm bummed that Sup Pop isn't seeing it fit to release a vinyl version of this new record (I have a promo from work, its out in a lovely CD gatefold in a coupla weeks). He just really gets how to write super simple yet deeply interesting pop song, in a way that makes me, as a wannabe songwriter totally insane.

I'd never heard of him before I saw him play at SxSW two years ago 'cause an old friend of mine was playing guitar with him. I was mighty impressed and have been a fan ever since. I figured out that I can really appreciate and like it in the right environment. It sounds stunning against the backdrop of the city outside the hours of daylight, particularly in the Victorian and Georgian streets in my neighbourhood when it's cold and wet - ie the walk to and from work most days. Doesn't sound as good in the confines of my home. I'm never going to listen to this come summer! Come to think of it, if we've a repeat of last year's "summer"...

Was it an orig?

it can't be. nowhere does it say it's a repress but it wasn't sealed and it's in too good of shape to be 27 years old. so between never being told it was a repress, shipping from europe, and the weak dollar (which i forgot about until after) i got hosed.

Isn't this great?

yeah, it's really good, much better than i thought it would be. i pretty much bought it because someone was playing "the coldest night of the year" at a party on new years (when it was in the single digits) and it had been caught in my head ever since. i'm digging it a lot, pretty good for these monochromatic solitary midwest winters.

After a second listening Im really coming round to it. "Song to Bobby" is great (when I listen to it now I get this picture of a teenage Chan at a Dylan concert in my head) and it reminds me of how I felt when Ive met her in the past. I remember having a similar experience with The Greatest when I first heard it, I wasnt sure what to think of it other than loving a few of the songs. At the moment Im particularly loving "Silver Stallion", "I Believe In You", "Don't Explain" and the new versions of "Metal Heart" and "Naked If I Want to."

Basically I think this is a great new album and given a few more listens Im sure Ill love it even more.:)

The Replacements Pleased to Meet Me

I was reading a great article about "Pleased To Meet Me" the other day:

Gibson.com - "Torn and Frayed: The Story of the Replacements’ 1987 Classic Pleased to Meet Me" (http://www.gibson.com/en-us/Lifestyle/Features/Torn%20and%20Frayed_%20The%20Story%20of/)

“It was the first time they tried to play sober,” producer Jim Dickinson recounts, “and it just wasn’t working. So we gave up. Every day they were like a sine wave. They wouldn’t be drunk enough early on in the day to get anything. Then they’d be good and drunk and it would be great. And then they’d be too drunk and they’d get useless. But at the end of the day Paul would start to feel good and want to play these awful covers, and that was fun, except we couldn’t really use any of them for the album. To this day he thinks he played on a bunch of those where I was really playing guitar.”

“Paul loved Alex. He loved him. But it wasn’t a mutual feeling. I don’t know. I’m gonna leave that one alone. There wasn’t a lot of admiration on Alex’s part, but that’s more about Alex.”

Main engineer Tjohn Hampton: “For the whole record, Paul was playing a black Les Paul with P-90s. Then, one day, they got their artist advance from Warner Bros. Across the street from Ardent was this place called Pyramid Guitars, owned by my friend Rick Rayburn, who was a collector. He sold some really sweet pieces—he had some killer vintage stuff, and Paul went over there and got a clear plexiglas Dan Armstrong with the replaceable pickups, so he came back over with one of those. So the guitar was mostly Les Paul on the tracks, but he picked up the See-Through a few times for coloration. But Tommy went over too, and he got a Thunderbird bass that he loved, so much that he decided he wanted to redo the bass on all the songs! Redo all the bass on all the songs now that he has a Thunderbird? You’re kiddin’ me!

“And I was just beginning to understand about cutting tracks and the importance of keeping that original feel over overdubbing. A three-piece band and you’re gonna take a third of it and redo it? No, you just don’t do that. See, they were all … ah … [stage whispers] drunk! Pretty much all the time. Most of the time it was red wine, though Paul did have a hankerin’ for the Heineken. But mostly it was just jugs and jugs of the red Gallo wine. So Tommy insisted on rerecording all his bass parts, and Jim was like, ‘Whatever you do, don’t lose the bass we’ve got.’

So Jim and I were sitting there, and Tommy was playing the song behind us with this Thunderbird bass. And man is that a boomy bass. Man can those things boom! And then all of a sudden we heard this hell of a noise! Just this huge crash, and man, I just lunged for the monitor knobs to turn it down. And I look and Tommy is on the ground, his Thunderbird bass—brand new—is also on the ground and it has snapped at the headstock. We don’t know what happened. Maybe he was dancing.”

"They'd never had their amps separated in the studio before, which is one reason their first few albums sounded so terrible,” the producer recounts. “When I did it, they complained. ‘We can’t play like this.’ The discussion wasn’t going anywhere so I left the room for 10 minutes and came back, and they were playing. I did that a couple times. Paul said they couldn’t play ‘Nightclub Jitters.’ He said, ‘We need real musicians for this.’ I left the room for 15 minutes and they were playing the song.”

"What a writer," Dickinson says simply. "And the chemistry in that band was amazing. They didn't give me an anthem though. If I had gotten a 'Bastards of Young' or a 'Left of the Dial,' we would have had the record of all-time. Still, it's a great record. I'm really proud of that one."

Yes but you're younger than me. Maybe if I'd heard it in high school I would've dug it but my first exposure was seeing the "Live Wire" video on MTV when I was in college and thinking it was pretty cheesy and a limp imitation of Kiss.

To each his own. :D I can't fault you tooooo much seeing as you released one of the fine records in my last post.

:: times new viking - rip it off. over and over and over and over again. (and again and again and again.)
:: the orb - okie dokie it's the orb on kompakt
:: japancakes - loveless
:: justus kohncke - safe and sound. YES! only one listen in, this is basically the album i was hoping for with 'doppelleben,' which is to say that it drops the campy vocal pop and just rides the grooves. (his vocals really grew on me, but still...)
:: hot chip - made in the dark. again, only one listen in, but i dunno about this. i like much of it, but the start is way too over-the-top IMO. a bit like "over and over" meets 'kish kash'-era basement jaxx, but i think hot chip do subtlety much better than the kitchen sink. but we'll see, i may come around.
:: cat power - jukebox. i need to listen to this more, but the packaging rules. i liked it online, and pictures don't even do it justice.
:: electrelane - no shouts, no calls
:: escort - singles EP
:: the magnetic fields - distortion
:: dead meadow - old growth. thumbs up.

I've been listening to Yo La Tengo's 'Ride The Tiger' a lot this week and really loving the 2 Dave Schramm songs! Is there anything that anyone on here would recommend checking out that he did after leaving Yo La Tengo? Quick searches show he's got some band stuff & some solo stuff, as well as playing on a bunch of others records...

I am guessing I am in the minority here based on the lack of responses to Awol's question, but I think pretty much anything Dave Schramm does is pretty great. He is an underrated guitarist with one of those well-worn voices that may take awhile to appreciate. I got turned on to _ Little Apocalypse_ after reading one of Gerard's recommendations about 100 years ago. And I still think "Heart Not Within" is one of the all-time great songs. Recently I bought the live cd _ 2000 Weiss Beers From Home_ which is a decent introduction to the band. It has a bunch of their best songs and a few cool covers. For some reason, the Schramms seem to be infinitely more popular in Germany than here in the USA. It sort of reminds me of the situation with Chris Cacavas, another great talent that the Germans love and the US is indifferent toward.

Anyway I think all the Schramms cds can be gotten used at great prices. I don't think you can go wrong with any of them, but I'm guessing others would disagree.

If you do end up grabbing a cd or two, please let me know what you think.

Best Regards,
Bruce

That's great, because all the singles and vinyl EPs have all the best stuff, and the Pleasures & Treasures album (the most easily available) is just great, but not mindblowing.

I just want to be able to tell people to get shit by this band but don't want them to start with the only thing that's easy to get!

It's a big step up for them. The Decline Of... and Open Season are good, and occasionally brilliant, but the new album is much more consistent. At their best I think BSP are such an exciting band, and this time around there are so many more songs that are like adventures or taking a deep breath. It's familiar - great tunes, offbeat and intelligent themes - just better.
