top story for pitchfork today/yesterday was about earthquake glue and the upcoming box set. looks like we even have a release date .. and pretty much everything patrick said using different words:

Guided by Voices Get Wonka with New LP, Box Set
Bob Pollard bizarrely insists on growing Gene Wilder hair for the occasion
Ed Howard reports:

There comes a time in every man's life when the ol' metabolism starts chuggin' a mite slower than usual-- you start thinking twice before pounding that Guinness, opting perhaps for a Bud Light or Pabst Blue Ribbon. We thought this might be the case with Guided By Voices' Robert Pollard, seeing as he's only released-- whaaaa?-- one measly full-length, an EP, and a seven-incher thus far this year. It even seemed a model of restraint that GbV's forthcoming full-length Earthquake Glue (due August 19th) was announced way back in March, with but one minor modification to the tracklist (the don't-ask-don't-tell anthem "My Kind Of Soldier") and no title changes-- not even a pretentious parenthetical subtitle! What gives?

Apparently, all hell will break loose this November 4th with the release of Hardcore UFO's, a six-CD monstrosity to include, among other things: a greatest-hits CD, a DVD of the 1998 documentary Watch Me Jumpstart, the de rigeur complilation of unreleased tunes, non-album singles, b-sides, and rarities, and the CD debut of GbV's much-bootlegged 1986 debut EP Forever Since Breakfast. This, please note, is GBV's third box set. Now that's entertainment!

But apparently, Pollard's not simply content to be just the most prolific musician ever (take that, Merzbow); now he wants to be Willy Wonka, too: it seems twenty-five random copies of Earthquake Glue will each contain a ticket entitling the lucky recipient to tour Pollard's slightly sinister mock-up of a chocolate factory. Psyche! Had you going there, but actually the tickets will entitle the bearer to a free copy of Hardcore UFO's when it becomes available. Actually, it's kind of a shame that Pollard won't be donning a velvety top hat and giving unwitting fans a tour of his whimsically psychedelic bachelor pad. I mean, Tobin Sprout even kind of looks like an Oompa-Loompa!

In any case, yer GbV-lovin' Grandpa Joe will be jazzed to hear that Pollard's more leisurely songwriting/recording track has given him a lot more time for touring, as Dayton's fab five hit the turnpike next month in support of Earthquake Glue. The brief spin through a handful of U.S. cities culminates in early September with the band playing the 10th anniversary concert for indie-rock glossy Magnet before heading off to Europe.

as I've said before, Pitchfork get's all it's breaking Matador news only after it's broken on this board.
