have you ever really enjoyed an album, but kept your relationship with the band to just that album? and then when you checked out their other stuff, you realized how much you were missing out on?
it's happened a couple times for me:
- yo la tengo. i started with ICHTHBAO and liked it quite a bit. but that was all for almost a year. then i heard painful and couldn't believe how good it was. electr-o-pura and fakebook quickly followed and the rest is history.
- the sea and cake. i started with the fawn and really loved some parts, but found it a little uneven. many many months later, i heard the biz and was blown away. i got nassau and their self-titled album very soon, and realized that i had started with probably the spottiest one of the bunch.
- the velvet underground. i LOVED their first record and knew it inside-out, but for years didn't know much else other than the hits. loaded didn't do much for me after a couple listens. then i heard white light/white heat - it was staggering. i've since gotten the third album and some live stuff, and wish i had come to my senses sooner.
i'm curious to hear other examples, if anyone's got any....
