Why do Times New Viking feel this compulsion to bury their wonderully catchy songs under a shit load of fuzz? Lack of money? Lack of self belief? Theyre on Matador so I see no reason for the former and if its the latter I see no reason for that either because theyre fucking brilliant. I just wish I could hear them properly.

Please come to England.:)

They are coming to the UK in May for a festival at Camber Sands I think. I hope there will be some proper shows involved too. I hate festivals

Can we just lock the TNV forum until people get the lo-fi-itis out of their systems? This is one step above bitching about artists who "sell out" by signing to a major label or appearing in a car commercial

Just as impressionism was an aesthetic choice for Claude Monet, and cubism was an aesthetic choice for Pablo Picasso, fuzz is an aesthetic choice for Times New Viking. Love it or hate it, it's how they want it to sound, and some people appreciate that quite a bit.

As for the commercial/major label thing, I'm pretty sure that conversation stopped being relevant sometime around the unveiling of the attached painting…

Stevethehouse sounds almost as self-righteous as I used to.

I just think a good dosage of Crooked Rain style mid-fi would do them good but if they like the trashcan aesthetic thats up to them.

I don't really see the connection there JS. What Im talking about here actually has something to do with whats going into my ears, not some vague anti-capitalist stance that has nothing to do with music. Id consider that an important difference.

Its just that some of us tend to prefer things that are well recorded. Thats an aesthetic preference just as much as saying you want everything to be trebly and distorted.

Jeez, this again? so soon?

They're actually quite professional and picky about their sound. They record onto a nice tape machine, they know how to get the sound they want, and that's the sound. They are actually quite "well recorded" because the recording correctly captures what they are trying to achieve.

You not liking it is fine, its not for everyone, but its not any different from the choice of chords they're playing or lyrics they're singing. Its part of what they do in a careful and thought-out way.

It reminds me of the old Jesus & Mary Chain story/myth that they took all of the bass out of Psychocandy to make record collectors think their music system was broken.

Maybe its just the old British/American divide rearing its head again or maybe its just me but Ive never really seen composition and production as being the same thing. However unlike Stevethehouse and, indeed, my old self Im happy to leave it at that and just accept that we disagree.

okay, legit question about TNV --

with both 'paisley' and the new album, the volume level of the cds are way above any other discs that i own. how is this accomplished? b/c a lot of the 'lo-fi' music that i own is just the opposite -- i have to turn up the volume knob a tad to get it to the decibel-level that i like.

I assume theyve used shitloads of compression and gain during the mastering stage. Thats the industry standard way of making records really loud. Unfortunately it flattens dynamics. Normally I wouldnt condone that sort of thing but in this particular case its seems to work really well. The songs from it Ive heard on Myspace are kind of like being screamed at. Real vicious.

So, are there going to be some "proper" UK shows??

Send them over as Cat Power's support act in June.:)
(probably sounds like a pretty weird pairing but didnt she once support the blues explosion?)

They're going to Europe in May/June, if I'm not mistaken. Not sure if that includes the UK.
