I bought my copy of the disc in 1992 directly from Matador. Printed on the disc that I bought as part of the artwork is "S & E" '91. A friend tells me that the first pressing didn't have this printed on the disc. Is he correct? If so, how many are in that first pressing? Anybody (Matador folks) answer this for me?

Why is it that the most inane questions in this forum are almost always invariably Pavement-related?

Why do you care?

As I sift through many of the threads here, all that I see is prepubescent arguing between Joseph and just about anyone else. That's why I don't post much here. Posting seems to be opening oneself up to attack. I asked a fairly straight forward question. Do you have the answer?

you know there's a Pavement Forum on here, right?

Why do I care? Because questions about Pavement in general clog up more space on the internet than dancing kittens, fad quizzes and Mahir combined. It was 1992. It was a Matador record. It was a small pressing. Problem solved.

Joseph's a well-trained agent provocateur. The arguments you're referring to are almost always one-sided affairs -- and, by that, I mean someone gets his panties in a wad because Joseph made a "funny." Grow up. If you can't take abuse on a message board, you must be a delicate flower in real life.

Do I have the answer? The answer is 42.

Well, hell. Why haven't *I* been in an e-scuffle? I'm starting to feel left out.

I pretty sure the first pressing of S+E did not have that written on it, while all subsequent ones did. I'm almost positive. what I wonder is which Crooked Rain CD art was first, the green red black with the scrawly writing or the black and white mirror image amphitheater pictures?

you wanna piece of me, paulie?

well, you'll have to wait until saturday, october 11th, when, if all goes well and according to plans, the Autumn Rhythm will be playing the Pilot Light in Knoxville. I know its not "straight over there," but shit, that's like an hour tops, right?

More like two and a half, but since it's on a Saturday I can probably make it.

Thanks, tinobeat.

Sorry for the rest of that, Paul, it was just my perspective at the time. The internet's a pretty big place, though. Surely my little Pavement question didn't take up too much room.

As far as CRCR and cover art, I don't have the definitive answer. I know that I bought my copy on the day of release and I have the scrawly writing one.

I was unaware of a specific Pavement forum, but I thought this was probably the best place to get an answer quickly.

Jeez people, what's with the attitude? Guy asks a simple question, he deserves an answer, and I've alerted Jesper and Mark Ohe.

It's almost like being in a conversation in the Matador office!

enchanted types...

the first pressing of "slanted & enchanted" in fact did not have writing/logos on the disc label; it only had the piano keys and the legal "swingline".

it was only after matador began having our cd discs manufactured at a warner brothers pressing plant that the label art was amended to include the pavement and the "s&e" '91 logos. this was because,
1) being manufactured at a different planr meant that i had to alter the layout anyway;
2) the matador head honchos (and possibly stephen malkmus as well?) felt that the band name and album title should be included somewhere on the cd label.

"crooked rain..." initially had the red. green messy art on it's cd label for the first pressing because big cat (pavement's uk label at the time) "designed" the label this way and there was no time (believe me) to make alterations because of the late delivery of the packaging art to matador by big cat. i never liked this design and on the second pressing i confered with stephen malkmus and we changed the design to what it is now.

"how does this guy know this stuff?" you ask. i know because i designed these things for matador and the band.

what else would you like to know? just ask...

What sucks ass is Pitchfork's new turd colored look and feel to their "Breaking News" website. Who the fuck do they think they are, Fox News? All they need is a scrolling ticker tape like display and a couple of brothers pretending to be Indie's Hannity and Colmes and they'll be set.

Thanks Mark. man, I'm a total geek for that type of thing, a combination of being a designer myself and a total music geek, as well as taking my first baby steps into releasing music and all the manufacturing fun (and unfun). Let me tell you, Teenbeat Records is like a feeding ground for geeky minutia like that. and Mark R. documents all that stuff so meticulously...

so how come you were getting the art from Big Cat and not vice versa? It seems odd that the (I would assume) primary US label would be getting master stuff from the liscencing label in the UK. I know nothing of the nature of the deal though...

oh, here's a question:
with some of my older Matador vinyl, there was the cool generic label on the records (usually one side) that had the Matador logo cape with all the side info in it. Did that use to be a standard label used on all the records of the time? how come it doesn't appear anymore? i like the idea of a label actually having its "label" that remains unchanging... Up Records does/did that, with their black, blue and silver generic Up label on all the vinyl. It added a nice consistency and, to use a lame term, brand identity (though the label's pretty ugly to these eyes).

more good questions here...

pavement were in london (for a scrabble competition?) the stakes were high and there was little time for nonsense like graphic design, so stephen dumped a load of scrappy images on the desk of their uk label's desk and headed for the high stakes scrabble tables. big cat whipped up the mess that is now "crooked rain..." (and took their time about it) then sent the stuff to me at matador...11th hour style.

the most recent "stock matador lp label" to see the light of day was lesser's album from 2000, "gearhound", ole 449-1. i do like that lp label design, but i prefer to have an lp label reflect the band's art more closely. the design does have it's admirer's though...patrick for one. you may see it again on future matador releases.
