No one in their right mind would eat such a thing. Scots that regularly eat this and deep_fried_pizza are out of their bloody minds. Who would want to eat a chocolate bar that was coated in leftover fish-fry batter anyway?
Alright fine. I admit it. I've had them. Even regularly one might say. But never again. Lesson learned.
The Bardo Pond record probably won't cause heart problems either.

Mars Bars are pretty gross before they're deep fried anyways.

so wait, are they served hot? wouldn't they just collapse and melt while you eat them?
one of the best things ever in the world was the "Velvet Elvis" sandwich at Deli Haus in Boston (which is now under new management with a new name and none of the nasty charm). Peanut Butter and Banana, but then... grilled! until the peanut butter is like warm Elmer's Glue!
they also had Guinness Floats there.. like a root beer float, but with Guinness. shockingly amazing tasting.

Poor, poor northern tinobeat. In the south, moms make those at their kids' requests each and every day of the week.

that doesnt sound delicious at all. but what am i saying, i know people that eat pigs feet.
I was unaware of this delicacy. Sounds horrible. The marsbar thing that is, not the pigs feet.

I'm pretty sure that I remember the afore mentioned delicacy as being something that was being sold at the Minnesota State Fair last year for the first time. Sounds pretty gross. When I did a Google search for it I turned up all kinds of deep fried treats, including Twinkies. Mmmmm, deep fried Twinkies....blechh!
silence is a rhythm too (http://www.geocities.com/mss_35/TheRezidence.html)
hmmm we don't get twinkies in england, so I don't really know what they are.

Twinkies are one of those "food items" that could survive a nuclear war. It's a soft smooshy cake tube filled with sweet creme - a classic American junk food item., with a shelf life of years. And yes, it is as gross as that description makes it sound!

Aren't Mars Bars in the UK different from the ones here in the US of A? I don't think ours have carmel for strength.
BTW, I grew up in The South (I'm still here, too) and I used to love grilled PB & J sammiches. My mom also made PB & banana sandwiches but she never grilled those.

BTW, twinkies are cute, young gay guys. They're not food but they are edible.

Deli Haus ROCKED! God I miss that place. Why does Boston, of all cities, destroy everything that's characteristically old-style and cool, and replace it with yupped-out banality?
I heard Al's Deli downtown closed too.
Re: Mars Bars. The UK Mars Bar is a totally different chocolate bar from the US version. They just have the same name.

Wasn't there a Simpson's episode that dealt with this?
I never realised the UK version was completely different to the US version.

I think the reason Boston is getting yupped out is that rents are skyrocketing (though that's been slowing down with the shite economy), and the student population is getting more and more boring and predictable.
I honestly think that when you have hundreds of thousands of college kids basically ruling the economy of a city, it needs to adapt, and when its fashionable to be all slick and yuppie-like, then the city follows...
Cambridge and Somerville still have a lot of great places, both for the eating and for the drinking and for both. Boston proper, though, is slowly getting destroyed by college kids loving the idea of conspicuous consumption.

Mr. HCI, I presume the part about having carmel for strength was the reference to the Undertones song? Dude, that was too deep for me.
And nobody has yet satisfactorally explained how you can deep-fry a Mars Bar (UK or US version) without it melting first.
Patrick
Perhaps you could deep freeze it beforehand?

I have a feeling paul may be right...
my guess, as with fried ice cream (that most baffling of Mexican treats), that its more of a "flash fry," so that while the chocolate coating might get soft, the inside retains its structural integrity. just bread it and dip it into REALLY hot oil for maybe 5 seconds, so some oil seeps in and browns the bread crumbs.
all this is speculation, though...
Deep Fried Mars Bars
Recipe from Scottish Fish and Chip Stands
1 cup sifted flour
1 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup cold water
1/4 teaspoon baking powder
4 Mars or other caramel covered candy bars
Shortening or oil for frying
Mix flour, salt, and water until smooth, cover, and let stand at room
temperature 20 to 30 minutes. Stir baking powder into batter. Place shortening
or oil in a deep fat fryer, insert thermometer, and begin heating over high
heat. Dip candy bars into batter, allowing excess to drain off. Fry in 375
degree fat until golden and crisp. Drain on paper toweling.

I know that they are not frozen prior to frying. They dip the Mars bars in some extra nasty batter and then flash fry them. It's not in the oil (also nasty as hell) for very long. When you eat the little bastards, it does have a melted consistency. It helps to be drunk when eating as well.

Are Mars Bars sold in America anymore?
I had a Snickers Almond bar recently and couldn't help but notice that it was the EXACT same thing as a Mars Bar (US version). It's not similar to a Mars Bar, it IS a Mars Bar. As much as I could tell, at least.
I wondered if M&M/Mars had phased out Mars and replaced it with the new Snickers variation.
And then a half-second later I thought about something else.
still have them. they had mars bars at my old job before i got sacked. they were good frozen with hot black coffee around 3pm when things were really starting to drag on..me and a coworker managed to drag out the coffee+candy bar ordeal to 30min or more each time.
nutty bars are damn good. not that fond of twinkies..or anything really spongy..except sometimes those pink snoball things..rubberized marshmallow outside, then a layer of dark spongy cake, then more cream filling. i think my mom liked those when i was a kid..but let's just leave the mother issues out of it.
this is my favourite matador thread ever.
what about beans on toast. can't forget about the ultimate comfort food.
sorry i don't have an ad for that....

Beans on toast! I am laughing my ass off. I just can't take that picture seriously! I've drawn a blank. I just can't think of anything more stoopid. Beans on toast... ha! That is a delicacy that anyone can afford.
You sound like you've never had it before.
i practically lived on beans on toast for my childhood. Now that I'm older and more refined I make asparagus on toast with a bechemel sauce. mmm yummy. I'll go look for a photo now.

Beans on toast are quite good, particularly on some toasted french rolls, with some mayo and cheese sprinkled on top
mayo and cheese!?!?!?! gross! now you've gone too far!

Maybe its a West Coast thing? That picture is hilarious to me. It just seems like a gag. I will definitely try it! I like beans and I like toast. I don't see any reason why I've never smothered toast with beans before.

Refried beans on toast are FANTASTIC if you are on a budget (which I usually am). Sounds a bit odd I know, but really give them a try before you write them off completely.
i really don't think anything can sound odd at this point in the thread.
how about nutella and peanut butter sandwiches. yummy.

i lurk here often amongst the namedrop shootouts, my pea shooter packing inadequate heat against the big guns, but this is a subject on which i consider myself to be some authority so here goes.
a little known fact from the north of england is that baked beans (sorry - haricot blanches in a rich tomato sauce) are ideally served not on toast, but on a triage of fresh buttered CRUMPETS. if this sounds disgusting i suggest you try it - you'll never look back.
*drum roll*
it's time to unveil my greatest idea. my contribution to mankind. like all the best ideas it's mind-blowingly simple:
SUGAR PUFFS WITH OJ INSTEAD OF MILK
actually any kind of J will do and also top it with 3 spoons of onken wholegrain strawberry yoghurt
tell me i'm not original. someone must have copped to this before...
damn.
sorry, i have to say i've done it myself... and tinobeat, there is NO reason to deprive yourself of nutella. it's everywhere! just buy it!
and, by the way you can NEVER go wrong with crumpets. I live on crumpets half the time. mmmm. i'm hungry...
Mmmm cheese melted on the top of crumpets......
