But Pitchfork said it sucked!

And they were wrong, of course. Much, much better than the last album.

On the other hand, the live set I saw with Neil on baritone guitar around that time was amazing. It was somehow a mix of the rhythmic chaos and intensity of mid-1980s, big band Half Japanese and early, psyche-jam era Grateful Dead.

Nice display! I love the cover of the Hauscha record.

What kind of camera do you use, Fiona?

Oh, that Hauschka album is just wonderful, and yes the artwork is very good.

I use a Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi, which I have found a great intro to SLRs. I bought it second-hand for a song - it owes me nothing. If you're thinking of making the jump I highly recommend the current model, the XSi. It's lovely to handle and well priced.

I'm looking at upgrading to a 5D soon, hoping to get a good second-hand bargain again.

This is the first time I have heard/owned a copy and from where I've looked it seems to just be remastered. No bonus tracks:( It is a fantastic record!

Nah, he only heard about them because they were on a sampler CD that I was playing in the car.

He's way ahead of me at that age, though. He's been going to all-ages shows for about a year already.

Well, if he likes the AA CD, get Canada Songs by Daughters and the self-titled CD by The Locust for him. There are two of the latter, BTW; get the one with the appropriation of Queen's News of the World for the cover.

the flying lotus album is excellent - just recently heard it for the first time but it's been getting steady play since.

i really love "shaking hands" on that women record.

the '10+1' comp is great. have you heard '10+2 classics'? equally classic IMO.

yeah, the flying lotus record is one of my favorites from last year. back in november, it was about the only thing i listened to.

i haven't heard the 10+2 classics record, and didn't even know it existed, in fact. if it has anything as classic as "acid tracks" on it, i'll be sure to get it though.

Oh man, they are SO SO excellent. I've been spending way too much money on these Shadoks reissues of old African psych LPs. Between Amanaz, Witch, and Question mark that's a good chunk, but god, its so worth it.

And yeah, the Nodzzz LP is a classic already, so much better than I could ever have expected, even though I was so in love with that single.

The BIPPP comp was bought on title and cover alone, and yeah, it paid off. So much good stuff!

i haven't heard the 10+2 classics record, and didn't even know it existed, in fact. if it has anything as classic as "acid tracks" on it, i'll be sure to get it though.

it's got a different sound than 10+1 - it lacks a bit of the warmth you get on some of the 10+1 songs ... much bleepier (and sometimes bleaker), with really deep bass. i really like it though. two of the nightmares on wax tracks - "i'm for real" and "aftermath" - are tremendous.

there's also 10+3, which is the remix 2CD collection from the same set. probably the most expendable of the three, but still worth having. i like the pram and autechre remixes on it as much as almost anything i've heard from either of them individually, and lots of other great artists are involved too (26 tracks total). i should really pull it out, it's been ages since i've listened to it...

tinobeat
01-30-2009, 08:55 PM
10+3 is the only one I ever owned, as I was a little wary of the more straightforward techno/house/acid/whatever of the first two comps. I think I should pick those up now, though, I think I'd like them a lot more now.

I've been listening to this a lot lately. It might be my favorite Sublime Frequencies release yet. If you liked the last Tinariwen album, Aman Iman, I'd highly recommend it. Very similar vibe.

tinobeat
02-01-2009, 04:41 PM
what AWOL said. The first side is pretty chill, acoustic stuff, but still moves along. The electric stuff on side B isn't quite as tweaked and shrieky as Group Inerane, but is pretty damn nasty in its own funkier way. Of the SF LPs though, Group Doueh is still my favorite, that shit gets pretty cosmic.

I recommend it highly.

I don't know a ton, and I'm sure Dave could expound more, but I DO know that Mississippi Records is mainly a record store in Portland, OR, that also releases records sometimes.

I think the fact that some of their releases are unauthorized bootlegs, they sort of operate more like a private press than an actual label. So no website, just some distributors that get their stuff, and word of mouth.

I just recently got the doubles of all three of those plus Ace of Spades. The bonus discs for each have the contemporaneous 45-only tracks plus alternate takes, BBC recordings and full concerts. Overkill has the most 45-only tracks, as there were three singles from it, as opposed to the other three which each only had one single pulled for release. On the other hand, Bomber has the 4-track live EP The Golden Years tacked on (that EP was my first Motörhead purchase, way back when I was 16). A good deal of the bonus tracks on Bomber and Ace of Spades are alternate versions. Half of the bonus stuff on Overkill is from two BBC recordings (a Peel Session and an In Concert session) but each is missing a track that appears with those same sessions on the BBC Live & In-Session dbl-CD from a few years back. Iron Fist comes with a full live concert in addition to the b-side "Remember Me I'm Gone."

BTW, Amazon UK has (or recently had) all four of these sets on sale for Ł4.98, which came to Ł4.33 after VAT was removed (since I don't live in the EU). I got all four plus the 22-CD Stravinsky box set for a total of $64.26 (shipping included). $2.14 per CD!

In middle school, the school bus' radio would be tuned to the local alt rock station. One afternoon, the ending refrain of "Blow Up the Outside World" caused our driver to pull over to the side of the road (no, really) and tell us that he would never let us listen to that station again. Not because some misreading of the lyrics, but because he couldn't stand the repetition. And thus ends my only Soundgarden story

does anyone else have los angeles by flying lotus on CD? i have leaked mp3s of it on my computer (bad, i know), and, honestly, even after i bought the CD i still listen to these more than the CD itself because i'm usually mobile and not by my stereo. but, while listening to it on the stereo as i made dinner the other night, i noticed that the last track on the CD is a completely different song, even though it is credited in the sleeve as the same one that i have on mp3 - "auntie's lock/infinitum (ft. laura darlington)." the version of that song that i'm accustomed to is beatless, ambient, and has a cut-up and re-arranged sample of a female vocalist singing "iiiiiinfiiiiiiniiiituuuuum" over & over again for about 2 minutes; the CD version is basically a splattered drill 'n' bass song with no vocals that lasts about 4 minutes; both are track 17. i suspect that the mp3 version is the correct song and i have some strange mis-print.

anyone else have a similar case? or has anyone heard anything about this happening?

HAHAHA
THAT song, video, etc is unreal!
Although Cornell's voice, much like Eddie Vedder's, can get on my nerves, Badmotorfinger is still a pretty sick album.

I've got Los Angelas on CD, although I think mine is a UK import, and "Auntie's Lock/Infinitum" sounds exactly how you described your mp3 version. Their is a remixed version by Quarta330, which I'm thinking is what you have. But that still doesn't make sense because it was released separately on an EP. Weird.

The Oranges Band Are Invisible
I'd pretty much given up on these fellas ever releasing something new, but they did and it's refreshingly non-sucky.

ABBA Waterloo, ABBA
It's only on the early albums that Benny and Björn are given the chance to sing lead, and "Suzy-Hang-Around" is better because of it.

Belle & Sebastian The Life Pursuit
Haven't played this in over a year at least, or any B&S for that matter. Forgot how good it was.

Guided By Voices Half Smiles of the Decomposed
This is a much better album now than it seemed like at the time. Bonus: "The Closets of Henry" has become my favorite GBV song.

Peter Bjorn and John Living Thing
I didn't really like Writers Block as much as everyone else seemed to, and now no one likes Living Thing as much as I do. Most of it's really low-key and sparse. Nice.

The Smiths The Queen is Dead, Louder Than Bombs
I dare say this is all the Smiths anyone really needs, but I can't because "How Soon is Now?" isn't on either of them.

"digidesign" seems to be the most popular dubstep tune this year, but i think i'd like it more if it had rapping over it. right now it sounds a bit like a three six mafia instrumental track. "you don't know what love is" is brilliant, though.

I quite like it, but one's enjoyment of it probably depends on tolerance for the cutting edge of electro-pop sounds circa 1984, and realizing that it will not be the revelation that the other AR releases over the last few years have been. Check out the track posted in Dusted's review to get an idea of what to expect: http://www.dustedmagazine.com/reviews/4924

One of the '70s LPs on Polydor? How is?

I think Hot Pants is the greatest single JB LP.

No, it's from 1986, but is made up of uncompiled singles and remixes of tracks from 1969-1971. I picked up the double-180gm vinyl plus download version that's part of Universal's "Back to Black" series. I'll let Wiki give you the lowdown/tracklisting:

In the Jungle Groove is a compilation album by James Brown. Released by Polydor Records in 1986 to capitalize on the popularity of Brown's music in hip hop circles, it included the first ever album release of the much-sampled 1969 single "Funky Drummer" along with a selection of previously unreleased tracks, alternate versions, and remixes. A similar follow-up compilation, Motherlode, was released in 1988.

The album's title is taken from a song Brown recorded in the studio in August 1970. The full recording of the song "In the Jungle Groove" remains unissued; however, on the album its introduction is appended to the beginning of "I Got to Move," another previously unreleased song recorded at the same session.

"It's a New Day" (Brown) – 6:15
"Funky Drummer" (Brown) – 9:13
"Give It Up or Turnit a Loose (Remix)" (Charles Bobbit) – 6:09
"I Got to Move" (Brown) – 7:12
"Funky Drummer (Bonus Beat Reprise)" (Brown) – 2:54
"Talkin' Loud and Sayin' Nothing (Remix)" (Brown, Bobby Byrd) – 7:40
"Get Up, Get into It, Get Involved (Mono)" (Brown, Byrd, Lenhoff) – 7:05
"Soul Power (Re-edit) (Mono)" (Brown) - 8:07
"Hot Pants (She Got to Use What She Got to Get What She Wants)" (Brown) – 8:42
"Blind Man Can See It (Extended)" (Brown) - 7:19 (2003 reissue only)

That really is one amazing album. I saw them perform it Don't Look Back-style on Saturday. They seemed very nervous (understandable enough, having not played some of the songs in public for 29 years) and there was quite a bit of faffing about between songs, but by god those songs are wonderful.
