Clarification on the Pavement vinyl for Record Store Day: this is the single LP live in Germany (and it's terrific), with sleeve similar to the live LP that came with BEGN... not one of the reissues.

Someone just posted to the Pavement list that each store is getting one copy of the live LP. Is that true?
Thanks,
tim

Mine is black as night. That's fine, though. :) I'm not sure how many copies the store where I got it had but it was sold out in less than an hour.

most of us knew there would be many stores stockpiling copies of the limited releases and then selling them on for a large profit a few months later.
I'm surprised at how blatant some of the sellers are being on ebay (posting stuff under their store name), for example Luna Records in Indianapolis, who are currently selling multiple copies of the Pavement Live in Koln LP (BOTH BTC and RSD versions!).

Maybe someone at Matador should keep a list of the abusers and make sure they don't get records next RSD?
I think that would be fair to the fans.

Wow, thanks for pointing this out. I will be bringing this to the attention of the sales dept.

So they were dicks with stockpiling the records AND they couldn't keep them in better shape than VG+?
jeez.
Patrick

That does rather cast the stockpiling concept in doubt.

It’s every bit as likely that the original buyers sold them back to the store.

Are sellers not obliged to advise if the product is used? I can't see that on the listing, but then my ebay experience is limited and confined to the Irish site which may have different rules.
Elijah - I take your point, but what's the likelihood of three of one and five of the other being sold back?

Cripes
One of the local stores I went to on RSD had apparently some extras of the live LP from the BtC BEGN promotion. As opposed to the stores selling at greatly inflated costs on eBay, though, they brought out what they had and sold it at the same price as the RSD live LP, when they ran out of that one. Would that more stores would behave that responsibly.
Speaking of RSD and Matador, if anyone needs a copy of the Malkmus 10" from the previous RSD, there's a store in town with at least five copies in stock. I believe they're $9.99 + tax. PM me if you want to work out a deal (I buy it and mail it to you, all at cost: record, tax, postage, PayPal fee).

It’s every bit as likely that the original buyers sold them back to the store.
Every bit as likely as Richard Nixon being a ballerina in the Bolshoi Ballet.

Come to think of it, isn't Luna Records associated with Guided By Voices' label Rockathon in some way?
Patrick

fiona, HCI - a VG+ grade is well below new.
Come to think of it, isn't Luna Records associated with Guided By Voices' label Rockathon in some way?
Yes, at least in some way. They are the folks behind the "Fading Captain Series" records many of which also had the Rockathon logo on them, and Luna's "Recordhead" label has put out some great GBV & GBV related records over the years
And as far as all of this speculation about Luna's stock goes it is just that: speculation.
I don't know for sure that those are copies that we sold to them and they then did not put out for sale and I haven't heard any sob stories of folks in Indianapolis who got to the store and found the records sold out etc. etc. This isn't like when we were doing the Jay Reatard singles and stores had them on eBay right away. And even then who is to say that is "wrong" when so many copies were bought by customers and then immediately flipped for much more cash?
Believe me, I know what it is like to really want a record and see it for a price that is out of my range, but that is the life of the obsessive fan. In this case I think we can call off the dogs.

Every bit as likely as Richard Nixon being a ballerina in the Bolshoi Ballet. Is it really that far fetched? Times are tough.

just coming back to this - they were selling multiple copies of each album, please stop the speculation that those may have been sold back by customers, come on!
Dave, I see where you're coming from but at the end of the day, RSD is supposed to encourage the consumer to spend their cash with their local record store, and hopefully in the process get a relationship going that gets them returning for more...
That's all very noble, but I sure as hell wouldn't be supporting guys like those flippers when they're sitting on sought-after stock and then hiking the prices when it suits them.
How about next year we have support the fans! sell them the record direct and allow them the chance to buy their favourite artists records at a fair price.
Just a thought of course.....

I don't know, re-read my post. There isn't really any hard evidence and until there is I think we can put this matter to bed.

Guys,
First let's recognize that Luna is selling the record as VG+, which for all intents and purposes means it's used... otherwise, they'd be selling as mint and probabaly hiking up the price a bit more.
We understand all of your concerns over this and are quite bummed ourselves that these things go on, however the gross reality of this is that once we ship those records to the stores, they are no longer our property... they belong to the stores. And while Record Store Day has guidelines in place and those people running RSD policing the stores' actions, there really is nothing we can do to control things like this.
So whether or not Luna has been sitting on this record since last April (which we sincerely think they have not) is really not in our interests to harp on.
Let's put it to bed and start getting psyched for RSD '10!!

At this stage I think it's been put to bed and tucked in to boot, unless Adam's waiting in the wings to sing a lullaby.
By the by, how many of you actually receive your (new) records in mint condition? Patrick, I did mean to respond by saying yes, I'm familiar with grading, but quite often - albeit mostly with regards to outer and inner sleeves - purchases fall short of being in perfect nick.
Patrick

It's a constant battle with new LPs that are shipped. Aquarius now double-boxes all my LP orders after I complained - which is great of them. Of course I probably pay more postage for the heavier package, but it's worth it to me.
Grades should be cover/record, so e.g. M-/VG+. If there's only one grade, I assume that's for the disc and the cover is in as-new shape.
