Does anyone have suggestions for essential artists and albums from this period/genre?

Your best bet is to buy a comprehensive multi-disc set or something, because it was completely a singles genre.

you could probably find a lot of old singles and LPs at Thrift Stores and Garage Sales as well.

There was an excellent record store in Dobbs Ferry, New York (just about 20 minutes up the Hudson from NYC) that specialized in doo-wop 45s, called Times Square Records.

I heard it moved to New Rochelle or White Plains, but never followed up.

Anyway, if you're in the area you should seek them out or call them, if they still exist. They should be able to offer superb advice.

Sounds good, I'll probably be making a trip up to NYC this October, so I'll definitely look for this record store.

Rhino comps always seem to do the trick with that era.

Yeah, my dad has these two Rhino comps.:

"The Best of Doo-Wop: Uptempo"
"The Best of Doo-Wop: Ballads"

You won't obscure tracks on them, but almost all the songs are wonderful.

You could also watch Public Television during any pledge drive and probably catch that awesome, but overplayed, concert with all the old groups.
