mogwai are coming over in september, and i was wondering if they're worth seeing live. i'm a huge fan and everything, but it doesn't really seem like watching them play would be that great.
i saw yo la tengo earlier this summer, and although i enjoy their music, i was bored stiff. i left after something like 5 or 6 songs into the set.
so, are mogwai a big bore unless you're totally whacked up on drugs and alcohol, or do they just rock out like none other?

are you keeping in mind that you're saying this to someone that left a yo la tengo concert?

why the hell would you leave a Yo La Tengo concert? maybe you're better off seeing the John Mayer show across the street.

chances are if you like your live music LOUD and at times INTENSE, Mogwai is the band. IMO, they are much better live than their studio output. I kind of lost interest in them when CODY came out because I just felt that it was more of the same stuff they had done previously. However, I had NEVER seen them live at that point. After seeing them on the CODY US tour, I was hooked again and never looked back. I've never missed any of their shows in L.A.
It's quite amazing to see these 5 guys make so much noise. It is also interesting to see each of them be in their "zone" while they are playing but to be so unified at the same time. A Mogwai show is really an intense experience. I suppose if you like to smoke bud (that which I don't) it would make the show better. But definitely bring your earplugs. I can't stress that anymore. They are the loudest band I've ever seen. Although I've never seen My Bloody Valentine live. ;-)

Saw them for the first time on the Rock Action tour. It still ranks in my Top Five shows of all time. They practically assault you with their music.
Saw them again earlier this year at one-off show here in L.A. They played even better together. But nothing compares to the first show.
Your first Mogwai show could be one you never forget. Enjoy!

yeah, my first mogwai show was memorable because it was the only time (so far) i had heard Summer and Stanley Kubrick live. it was cool hearing SK before they had released the e.p. too. although, i know some people say it gets old after awhile, i still enjoy the quarter hour of feedback at the end of every mogwai show!
i'm off to see them now too... winning endorsements...
yes, don't ever forget the earplugs. i made a huge mistake by forgetting them at one mogwai show. and i forgot to see if there was any earplugs at the merchandise area. at the venue there were several smaller pa's at the sides. and i stood near one of them and at the end of "my father my king" it was unbearable. i couldn't hear much for a couple of days. since then i've never forgotten to bring the sacred earplugs. by the way you can hear the music much clearer with earplugs.
and if you're a total purist you can always purchase custom fit earplugs that decrease each frequency proportionally, so that you don't suddenly lose more bottom end than top and ruin what you're listening to... very handy for musicians too of course...

I'm going to see them Monday in Austin at Emo's with ...Trail of Dead. I'm glad I read about 7 "earplug" warnings or I would've never thought to bring any. But I was wondering: Will cotton balls do the trick? I never wear earplugs (or anything for that matter) and I know I should. I can already tell my hearing is getting worse and worse after every show I go to.

well, if your not going to wear earplugs, i suggest that you DON'T stand near the house speakers. cotton will NOT do the trick. earplugs are about 3 bucks a pair so they are a pretty cheap investment.
even the 39 cent ones will do better than cotton wool. If you go to any concert really it's worth investing in good earplugs.. by now so many FOH sound guys have gone deaf, and boost the house mix well beyond necessary. And then of course there's bands like mogwai that make it necessary....

The word "concert" makes me cringe. I prefer "show."
