I was going to post a poll asking people what their favorite song is off E-G, but the poll only allows 10 options and I couldn't eliminate 5 songs, so ... what's your favorite song off Earthquake Glue?

I would probably go with Secret Star, although Main Street Wizards and Trophy Mule are right up there. No other man in the history of the world could write Trophy Mule ....

Strong back end of the record ....

My favorite track is "Best of Jill Hives".

Oh man, I can't pick... Jill Hives? Useless Inventions? Forget it, I love the whole thing. Another masterpiece. And why is it that every record he puts out is "the best since....". How can every record be the best since? Then when the next one comes along, they talk about the last one like it was so-so, when the year before it was trumpted as the greatest ever (since UTBUTS, maybe). Reading reviews for EG now, they're all down on UTAC. Everyone loved UTAC last year!

I agree with this syndrome. It's not just gbv albums..it seems comman for any band for whom popular opinion is that their best work is behind them. Some review i read yesterday said EG was best since Isolation Drills, and before that, since Mag Earwhig.

Anyway..my favorite song is secret star. Or I'll replace you with machines. or

The cliche I like is "X is their most mature album to date". 98% of the positive reviews from Mag Beerwig on up call each album more "mature" than the previous. Is there any other band that consistently gets that?

The band really oughta go out of their way to make the next album "immature".

Why should they, they're not Ween.

Best "Prog" song: Secret Star

Best "Pop" song: Jill Hives

Best Rocker: My Kind of Soldier

I'm gonna bring some negativity into the thread by saying that so far Dead cloud is my least favourite.

Man, dirty water for sure. It's like the promise of Bunco Men but with payoff.

I like every song on the record, but right now "Useless Inventons" is the one that has me humming and singing along all day.

The Beat your wings solo is lodged firmly in my head. This never happens to me. Doug is god (u).

I'd been listening to the first half of this record and neglecting the last five songs or so...big mistake! I drove home yesterday in thick traffic, blasting Trophy Mule > Apology in Advance > Secret Star > Of Mites and Men...awwwwww, yeah. I was partial to Useless Inventions before, but now nothing can compare to the might and majesty of these four songs played in sequence, very very loud.

Questions like this one make me shake my head. As soon as I think that "Jill Hives" makes me salivate, "Secret Star" and others make my jaw drop.

I don't think I'll ever be able to decide on a favorite song from this album.

I take it you like this one more than VTAC then. Also, I think in time it will climb up my top 10 list for a while yet.

I think UTAC is quite kitschy.

It's funny that an album that was stuck in my CD player for the entire summer of 2002 (UTAC) and that I must have listened to 120 times now sounds weak compared to the new one.

Yeah, it has some fantastic songs though, Storm Vibrations, Everywhere with hellicopter (which no one but me seems to like), Back to the lake, pretty bombs wings of a thorn- they're as good as most stuff on EQG so far from initial listening.

"Everywhere With Helicopter" and "Back To The Lake," as "Glad Girl-ish" as they may initially sound are the better pop songs on UTAC and are closer to "Chasing Heather Crazy-ism."

Sounds like the Who to me. Listen to the drums. Pure Keith Moon.
